In Japan, Kamo refers to a wild duck, but I don't think anyone used
it as a last name, although there are several cities by that name.

Kamo, Niigata, a city in Niigata Prefecture
Kamo District, Gifu, a district in Gifu Prefecture
Kamo District, Hiroshima, a district in Hiroshima Prefecture
Kamo, Kyoto, a town in Kyoto Prefecture
Kamo, Okayama, a town in Okayama Prefecture
Kamo, Shimane, a town in Shimane Prefecture
Kamo, Shizuoka, a town in Kamo District in Shizuoka Prefecture

I'm kind of doubtful that the family name in question
is Š› (かも kamo duck), as you said. It could be 蒲生
(かも‚¤/Kamou), usually romanized as Gamou or Gamo,
which was the name of a Toyotomi retainer. 加茂 and
賀茂 also pop up as possibles for かも kamo.

Interesting encoding. ;)

And don't forget Kamo no Chomei, author of one of the most
famous books in Japanese history, the Hojoki.

Re: [samuraihistory] Kamo

by Warlord

Gentle Folk,

I acquired a camellia from the estate of a deceased friend here in Oz. It was a
camellia by the name of "kamohonami". His lady friend in Japan asked me if I
could "rescue" the plant from his garden because it was planted in her honour.
Apparently my friend had great difficulty in finding this particular variety,
taking 18 months to do so. I immediately recognised the name "Hon'ami" as that
of the famous family of sword appraisers, and guessed that "Kamo" meant
something else. Being a sword man I never bothered to chase it up until now,
but I do know that flowers are usually named after something of significance to
the namer.

Putting "kamohonami" into google gave this link, which offers kanji for the name
and an explanation:

http://www8.ocn.ne.jp/~novalis/kamohonami.html

加茂本阿弥
(Kamo-Honnami)
Kamo='a place in Kyoto'
Honnami='An active famous artist in the Azuchi-Momoyama Period'

A couple of other links were interesting, one for Ikebana followers of the Enshu
school.

Regards,

W.

Did serizawa kamo really exist? One of shisengumi member who was also the
chief of Shinsengumi besides Kondo Isami, in Taiga Drama Shinsengumi.

Thanks.

Really? Gave my computer a headache. :)
Hm. Yahoo, I suspect, is having fun again.

Your mailer isn't specifying the encoding properly, and it's coming
through as "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1".

Changing the encoding manually did make the message legible, but it's
mildly annoying to have to do so. :)

Hmm. I'm just using Yahoo Mail, like I always do. But
at least you can get to it--and those of you who use
Unicode feel my pain.
