Books on the Samurai

by lordofkoriyama04

Hello!

I've been a member of the group for a while but I don't post messages
often.

Can anyone tell me where's a good website for buying books on famous
samurai? In particular the Sengoku daimyos.

Individual biographies are good but what I'm after is a book that
details the history of the major Sengoku clans (ie 10-15 pages on
each house):

Tokugawa
Oda
Hojo
Shimazu
Otomo
Mori
Takeda
Uesugi

Also, if anyone knows of a biography of Mori Motonari (my favourite
Sengoku warlord) then could you please let me know. It'd have to be
an English version of course as I don't read Japanese.

I've looked on Amazon but they only seem to have biographies on
Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi and I've read books on both of
them!

Thanks

Neil

Hi! If you want to look at books about samurai, your best shots would be eathier www.amazon.com or http://www.artelino.com/articles/samurai.asp or www.google.com and type in 'books on samurai' 'ancient samurai families' etc.. ect.. use common sense! (no offense) type in what you want to find out! CIAO!

I've seen many in Japanese, but none in English.
I really believe that some of us in this newsgroup should form a
task-force and publish at least a series of short biographies. So many
cool (hi)stories out there that have not yet been translated...

So, who's in??? ;o)

There is a recent bio of Nobunaga, but being published in Holland it's
quite pricey.

Japonius Tyrannus : The Japanese Warlord Oda Nobunaga Reconsidered
(Hardcover, 2001) Author: Jeroen Lamers

----------

Market price in the US is around $70+.
Better go to a University library and do a neat xerox job (Would cost
around $15-20)

I'd be in if I knew enough about it. (Maybe someday I will! :-D!) I'd love
to tackle the Oda clan and its retainers. :-) Or the Takeda. :-)

I'm working on a translation of a "Oda Retainers
Dictionary" I got as an insert in a Rekishi Gunzo
book. Though at the current rate, I might finish it 2
years from now.

Regarding Mori Motonari, try;

'Reflections on the Life and Times of Motonari Mori. Sengoku Busyo; Exmining the Causes of Death and the Medical History of his Family and of the Period' by Dr. Usui Shizuteru.

Just picked up a copy (maybe easier for me since I live in Hiroshima) but it may be found on Amazon, etc.
Unfortunately can't tell you what it's like, as I've yet to make time to fit it in with my other reading.

[OT] Romanization was [samuraihistory] Books on the Samurai

Just a fleeting question - what kind of romanization scheme does this
book use? To get "busyo" they had to use either kunrei or
nihon-shiki, both of which are ugly abomonations :). But to get
"Shizuteru" it had to be Hepburn - or perhaps something else such as
a personal style created by the author/translator/editor.

No big deal. It just caught my eye.

It was published by Gariver Products, Hiroshima, in 1997.
I only wish I could offer even a vague comment upon it's content, but I've yet to have a chance at even a brief perusal. It was basically just something I couldn't resist when I popped into Sogo to pick up a newspaper.
