Saigo Takamori

Who says that Christmas shopping for one's wife can't be a postive experience?

I went to the local Barnes & Noble to pick up some books for my wife. I
glanced at the history section while I was there and found a brand new book. It's
called "The Last Samurai, The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori", by Mark
Ravina ($24.95 US).

The copyright is 2004. Naturally, I bought it. I was slightly disappointed
to see that the Satsuma Rebellion is covered in only 10 pages in the last
chapter, but I will collect anything in English written about this period.

The book also contains a 15 page bibliography, which I am looking forward to
reading in great detail.

I don't know if the author planned the book's release to coincide with the
movie of the same name, but if he did, he's brilliant. If he didn't, then he's
very lucky.

I have just learned that there is another book on Saigo Takamori

_The Last Samurai: The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori_, by Mark Ravina

you can find his Curriculum Vitae here:

http://www.emory.edu/HISTORY/vitas/CV-Ravina.htm

While I have not read the book myself -- literally just learned of its
existence about 10 minutes ago -- it sounds like it may be worth looking
into.
