Japanese castles

by andjoysmith

I have seen how the Japanese castles were built, I
would like to see some pictures of some really amazing
Japanese castles, like Osaka Castle. In 1614 and 1615,
that castle I mentioned was invaded by Tokugawa Ieyasu
before he died in 1616.

Re: [samuraihistory] Japanese castles

Unfortunately the current Osaka castle is a modern reconstruction and only
a pale imitation of the one built by Hideyoshi in the late 1500s. Although
many historical structures were destroyed in WWII, there are still
a number of castles that are more or less "original" construction,
with a limited amount of restoration work over the years.
The most famous to westerners is Himeji, sometimes called
the "White Heron" castle. However there are many others, including
my personal favorite, Inuyama, a tiny jewel of a castle on the Kiso River,
north of Nagoya.

Thanks, these sites I'm going to look at when I'm done
with my email, but I do have one question. How did
Tokugawa Ieyasu sieged Osaka Castle in 1614 and in
1615 before his death in 1616?

Re: [samuraihistory] Japanese castles

by William letham

Well that would take some volumes to describe in detail the two sieges of
Osaka jo. Basically the winter campaign ended in a stalemate. During the
truce Ieyasu managed to have the Toyotomi side fill in the moats this
allowed him more access during the summer campaign. The Toyotomi side
realizing this lead its troops in a massive land battle outside the castle
but were defeated.

Perhaps the most detailed account in English would be in James Murdochs
second volume of his history of Japan.

Give me sites to look up to learn more, I'll try
looking at barnes & noble book store or online about
this subject. I wonder how Osaka Castle laid out,
before the sieges in 1614 and in 1615.

Re: [samuraihistory] Japanese castles

by William letham

Well there are troves of books in Japanese such as the rekishi Gunzo series,
also Gakken publishers had a series on Japanese Castles of which Osaka jo is
still available. These books give detailed info, charts, graphs , maps , CG
recreations, pix, on every aspect of Japanese castles, but they are in
Japanese. There is nothing comparable to these available in English. as for
what's available on line sorry I can't help there, hopefully someone else
has info.
