Hi Djemi,

I am from Indonesia too, live in Sidoaro Jawa Timur. Where do you live in
Indonesia? BTW, I am not an expert in Nihonto and I may not be able to help
you to identify your nihonto but I always love to know about nihonto, could
you please send me the pics of your nihonto to this email?

Thanks.

Hello all how is every one? I have finally been exposed to an authintic Hanwei sword. However, i do have a question, can ability make up for the sharpness and strength of a sword. Like can a $100 sword cut as well as a $1,000 one? GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Ok I see it as this, A poor blade can compromise even the best swordsman, Yet holding a 'good' blade and having little or no knowledge is fatal, The sword is an instrument it's only as good as it's owner...

Hi

I am a hanwei dealer and I own several old katana (all
over 150 years old).

Even though I deal in the Hanwei (Paul chen) items I
have to say you can not match the feel or quality of a
hand made blade that was created for real use.

Even the most expensive chen blades do not come close
to a katana that was made in the days when it was
possible it would be used to kill for real. I dont
know what it is but there is just something missing.

However saying this I personally do use a chen sword
when I am training japanese swordsmanship.

Why do I do this, its easy because I would rather
damage a sword I can replace within 48 hours than
damage a sword made by someone who died a 100 years
ago and will never be replaced.

If your after a chen I like the musashi but I had the
tsuka on mine cut down as its way too ong. once cut
down it improved the balance and feel

Re: [samuraihistory] hanwei

by federicotrejos

Good afternoon to all.

I practice Iaido with a Hanwei Practical Katana.
The story is this : It was from a guy who used to
practice Iaido in the same Dojo I do. He was playing
with the Katana ( that is the best description of what
he was doing ) and he damaged the edge. So he put
the sword on sell and I bought it. It is around 3
and a half pounds heavier than a normal Iaito, but it
is ok ( my arms are getting stronger, imagine what I
can do with a Iaito !!! ).
Before I kill the sharpenes from the edge, I can tell
you that when I pass a sheet of paper on the mono-
uchi of the blade, when I was close to the final of
the mono- uchi I have to stop before cutting my
fingers.
In a scale from 1 to 10 on sharpenes for comercial
swords, I give Hanwei swords a 9.
If you have one, my advice is : do not play with it.
It is a weapon (or mean to replay a weapon ) and is
primary objective is to kill people.
Japanese swords are beauty to see, to handle and to
cut with it; but always keep in mind that it is a
weapon. Be respectful with it, because it will remind
you.
About the ability of the swordsman, I can tell you
this old japanese saying : "An excellent Katana will
cry in the hands of a bad samurai"...
So if you are training, train hard. And if you are
training hard, train harder. There is always
something new to learn.

Best regards to all.

Good afternoon.

The web pages I usually watch more are :
www.mantisswords.com
www.bugei.com

I know for sure you will find Paul Chen´s blades
there. I like Mantis Swords for the prices and
variety although Bugei seems to be more quality and
prestigious, therefore expensive.
And if you are buying a Chen´s blade, I strongly
recomend you to also buy a maintenance kit ( with
choji oil, kami paper and polishing powder ).

And if you are katana a fanatic, watch this other ones
( at last to dream ) :

www.jidai.jp
www.nihonto.ca
www.sword.ne.jp
and my preferid ...
www.iaito-katana.com

Best regards and please let us know what happen.

Re: [samuraihistory] hanwei

by sgt_fury72

I know a guy named Bill Morris. He has a website online
www.michiganknives.com. He has more blades than what he shows online. Just
shoot him an email and he will let you know what he has. He gave me a great
deal on a tiger katana and wakizashi... 1400 for both. Of course I was
overseas at the time, and seems to be very pro military (probably the other
reason I like him so much). But his prices are some of the lowest i have
seen for Hanwei blades.
Just on a personal note. I think that the hanwei blades are about as good
as you are going to get for a katana that is made outside of japan.
Especially for the price. I have to say I really like my tiger set. But
now of course by no means am I an expert. But I practice iaido and have
seen different swords through the various students of the class. I myself
have a custom made iaito from japan... for a non live blade it is really a
gorgeous sword. Again can't state enough that they are very sharp! (the
hanwei blades). I have both the practical plus and tiger sets... (katana's
and wakizahi). Both are very, very sharp. There is a noticable difference
in quality though from the practical plus to the tiger. You can definitely
tell the practical plus is made for cutting practice!
Well I hope that helps. Very good deal though on the sets!

shoot him an email and he will let you know what he has.
