Try this:

When were knights first encountered in European history, why and how did they appear?

When you can answer that one....

I would cite the final battle of Masakado's rebellion 940 as signifying the
emergence of "samurai" militarily. The Battle of Kojima is the first
recorded incidient of individual warrior combat that would latter typify
samurai warfare up to the end of the Kamakura period. It was also the
last/final battle involving armies trained (or using remnants of) the old
Taiho code of warfare.

I have always been fascinated with the samurai culture, when I found this

I am glad to be on.

It seems there's a real Argentine axis here.

Anyone from Portugal or Brazil? I don't do Portuguese, but would love to talk someone into translating
Frois' Historia de Japam from Portuguese into English...

I'll have to check at home later, but I think it is being worked on by the
Haklyut Society. I think it is scheduled for release next year or the year

Re: [samuraihistory] (unknown)

There is one rather old book (1916) called "Ghenko The Mongol Invasion Of
Japan" by Nakaba Yamada. This is the only book length treatment, to my
knowledge, on the subject in English. Otherwise you might turn to the
chapters in books by Turnbull, the Samurai, the Samurai Sourcebook, or the
sections from "Cambridge History of Japan Vol. 3." There is also an essay in
"Medieval Japan" ed. By Hall and Mass. In Japanese there are truckloads. A
lot were published last year to coincide with the Taiga Drama Hojo Tokimune.
Of those one that I recommend is Volume 64 in the Rekishi Gunzo Series
called "Hojo Tokimune".

Re: [samuraihistory] (unknown)

Hi Tobias
Have you read Go Rin No Sho by Miyamoto Musashi? I've read it a few times
because its written in a way that I think is some what difficult to under
stand the first time you read it, but each time I read it I get more and
more out of it. Its about the tactics of war, both small scale (fencing) and
large scale (battle field) tactics, he thinks of both large and small as
sort of the same thing, the same basic tactics are used in both aspects of
war.

I think its a great book, I've only read it as an HTML document
Heres the URL in case you want it...
http://www.samurai.com/5rings/

I have a question for you guys on the forum.
Many people say Miyamoto Musashi invented the use of both Katana and
Wakizashi at the same time, but if this is true, how come we learn this
technique in Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, a Ryuha that was founded by
Iizasa Choisai Ienao in ca. 1447?

Any incite are greatly appreciated.

Marius.

PS: Im also Norwegian, where in Norway are you located? Do you study any
form of Japanese war art? I study Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu in Oslo
its very interesting and fun.

Re: [samuraihistory] (unknown)

by Mikiko Letham

When emporers resigned they were called Jo-ko if they didn't become
monk-priests and Dajo ho-o (often abbreviated to Ho-o) if they did.
Sometimes they were Jo-ko for a period and later became Ho-o as in the case
of Go-Shirakawa. If there were more then one retired emporer which was
frequent they were distinguished by the ranks Ichi-in, Hon-in, Chu-in,
Shin-in. The books in Japanese that I have refer to Gotoba as Jo-ko from
his retirement at the age of 19 in 1198 until the period of the Shokyu no
ran which would indicate that he didn't become a monk. If he had he would
have been refered to as Ho-o, but then again there were many titles bandied
about in those days. The idea of the emporer as divine is a little sketchy,
while many people in Japanese revered the throne as divine they quite often
treated the occupant like trash. As for the term Ji-Kyu I can't seem to find
this in my resources. I hope this helps.

You may find Yoshitsune pix, but not kamon. They weren't developed by the point
of the Genpei War. The Minamoto and Taira were identified by red banners and
white banners, not by heraldic trappings.
