Definition of Iaito

by zevlord

Hi All

Could someone be so kind as to tell me the meaning of the
word Iaito in this context?
"Iaito Sword" I think this might be a brand or the name of the
manufacturing company. Anyways any help would be great.

An 'Iaito' (or 'Mogito') is a katana for Iaidoka (or Aikidoka), although the phrase 'iaito sword' is rather superfluous, akin to saying 'katana word' or 'claymore sword'.

An Iaito is a sword for Iaido. These days a sword "for practice" and
most are machine made replicas like those from Noshu-iaido and other
vendors, often mogi-to, are called Iaito and are what most people think
of. Many distinguish Iaito as being unsharpened while swords for
Batto-do are for cutting and are sharp. People who can afford it get
Iaito made to order by modern swordsmiths and so carry shinsaku-to
Iaito. My iaito is late Edo period shinken and is quite sharp, IMHO...
