The films are delightful, but confusing, unless you happen to have read the
novel they're based on - Yoshikawa Eiji's _Musashi_, originally serialised
in Japan's leading newspaper over a five-year period in the '30s. It's
available in five paperback volumes, and it's got some great insights into
Edo-period martial culture.

samurai I -musashi miyamoto
samurai 2 - duel at ichijoji temple
samurai III - duel at ganryu island

The above three are very good films, IMO. The second one won the Academy
Award for Best Foreign Film, btw.
