what do you call the daily amount of rice for a person
I understand that a koku is worth about 300 days of rice so what
would the daily amount be called.

also does anyone no the cost of a matchlock weapon circa 1600?

Hi Wayne, a matchlock from that period in good condition would probably
run into the 10's of thousands of dollars, be it 10, 20 or more
depending on the condition. There are a couple on Yahoo Japan at present
that are in very poor condition and from the 1800's with split and
damaged wood and heavily rusted barrels and they are already fast
approaching US$1000.00. Quality will obviously cost a lot more

cheers

These kind of things are notororiuosly tough. Measurements varied
greatly by location, and across different eras. Just for reference,
the modern measurements of rice (which are done by weight) are
as follows. Traditionally these were measures of volume, and
still are in some uses.

1 gou 一合 = 150 grams = 180cc
10 gou = 1 shou 一升 = 1.5 kg
10 shou = 1 to 一斗 = 15 kg
4 to 四斗 = 1 tawara 一俵 = 60 kg
10 to = 1 koku 一石 = 150 kg = 180 liters

Again to be clear these metric equivalents are current, modern
definitions. It's just to give a sense of how the units of measure
break down.

While the math doesn't work out perfectly, you can
see that a samurai would have roughly 5 'gou' of rice per day. So,
while 'a day's worth of rice' really was not a unit of measure with
its own name, it's a pretty common conception that 1 day = 5 gou.

Now this has all kind of problems. If a person really ate all 5
gou of rice, they would have not any left over to turn into cash.
In addition, there are an uncountable number of simplifications
and assumptions in the above. But, for a quick rule of thumb that
is fairly well accepted, I would think 5 gou per day would
be good enough.
