Last straw of the Ninja

by rami_efal

Um.. guys, I just want to clear something here for myself, after all the ninja bashing going around. I understand the shinobi were a specially-trained samurai, with prominence on disguises to allow incognito espionage. but in case a night-suit was required, they did have it, or is the night-suit a complete western fiction-making? Rami.

It's pretty much a modern theatrical thing. It's based -- losely -- on the
uniform of the bunraku puppeteers' assistants, an outfit intended to mean "I'm
not here, ignore me". When ninja exploits were translated to theatre in the
1800s or so, the outfits were understood in the milieu to mean "invisible." It
just stuck.

According to the Iga-Ueno ninja museum, they wore dark
blue for night missions, if they needed to go unseen.

This sounds right. Dark blue is much harder to see at night than black.
Black is actually too dark and makes a visual "hole" in the night.

HI

the reason for this is black shows up in the dark -
strange as it may seem.

I think the shoninki or ninpiden also states that
other colours used were orange red, greem and grey.
these absorb any light at night and turn you partly
ivisible

Noup,it's not western fiction-making.They did have "night-suits" made of fabric. The Shinobi were spies and rarely they killed someone. But they had very soft fabric costumes in black and the Shinobi only acted at night. They were also counterspies, spotting enemy Ninjas and telling the guards were the ninja hideout is.

HI Edy

I am afraid I will have to disagreew with you here. if
you read posts by myself and one other forum member
regarding the black outfit you iwll see that black was
not the colour to be used.

it was a creation based on the Bunraku puppet theatre
and not a costume used by real ninja

While on the rare occaisions that spies needed to act
on night missions they did wear BLUE (as has been said
multiple times here, not the black that you
mentioned), for the most part, they didn't wear any
"uniform" at all. I think Tony's comment was about
your statement that shinobi lurked in the shadows,
finding enemy shinobi and pointing them out to guards.
That's just simply not true. As Tony said, for the
most part the black outfits are a convention of
fictional theater.

Shinobi and ninja are different words for the same
thing. And they didn't wear any "uniform". Kind of
hard to find the fact that your a spy if you go
slinking around in night clothes all the time, be they
blue or black. Generally they wore whatever wasn't
obtrusive.

They didn't wear a uniform. It's a fairly basic sentence. :)

Regular clothing. Unobtrusive clothing. Clothing that wouldn't make them stand out.

Paul,

Thank you for your advice.I hate arguing with someone.I'm just expressing my opinion.
If you have noticed,I'm only saying something when it's related about the Sengoku period which I know well(there are many guys here that know even when one of the Daimyo in the Sengoku went to drink tea).Or there are some parts which I know some bits so I'm saying what I know.Thank you.

Peace all,
Edy

While on the rare occaisions that spies needed to act
on night missions they did wear BLUE (as has been said
multiple times here, not the black that you
mentioned), for the most part, they didn't wear any
"uniform" at all. I think Tony's comment was about
your statement that shinobi lurked in the shadows,
finding enemy shinobi and pointing them out to guards.
That's just simply not true. As Tony said, for the
most part the black outfits are a convention of
fictional theater.

Edy--

I don't think there is a problem--I think he was
probably surprised, because for a 13 year old you ask
some darn good questions, and have good input. Most of
us long timers here started out the same way--for
whatever reason, whether it be having watched a
samurai movie at age 4 or whatever, we got hooked by
your age and just kept reading. Keep it up. I know you
said you are in Romania--any Japanese language classes
there, or are you learning on your own? I tried to
teach myself before I took courses in college--I ended
up having to unlearn a lot, so I recommend at least
trying to find some tapes to get the right sound.

Trust me, we'd give you hell about being 13 if we felt
you deserved it--and you may get some jokes now and
then, but it's only because we like you.

Well,

For 13 you probably know a good deal more about this period than I do at 39!

I dabble in Kendo, enjoy Kurosawa movies, and wargame the period a bit.

Cheers,

Nate,

In Romania it's damn very hard to learn Japanese.I learnt with a teacher hiragana(and a bit of Katakana) so far.I'm gonna start again in October or November so i'll continue my studies. The Japanese language is very hard but it's fun(especially talking to my friends at school and they don't understand a bit!!!!) and I like it.I tried learning on my own but I found out that it's almost impossible to learn.About the Sengoku period,I have in my room a complete bookshelf reserved for all the stuff with Japan(books, pages on which I printed much Sengoku stuff from Samurai Archives, floppy disks on which I have information about Japanese castles.....)Plus,it's been great here and it's been very fun here on this forum and I'm hoping we'll discuss other great and interesting subjects about the immense history of Japan.

Cheers,
Edy

Re: [samuraihistory] Last straw of the Ninja

by deanwayland

Edy,

I confess I envy you your early entry in to and enthusiasm for the
subject. I sadly was utterly uninterested in pre-modern history until
1981, and before that I had been thoroughly put off the martial arts by
the whole "ninja/kung fu" craze. I finally woke up to history in that
year, but went off and delved in to European arms, armour, and sword
play etc. I only got bit by the samurai bug, in the very late eighties,
when a friend in publishing offered me two cheap copies of H.Russell-
Robinson's translations of "The Armour Book of Honcho GunKiko" (forgot
the correct spelling) and "The Making of Helmets and Armour in Sixteenth
Century Japan", which I didn't even bother to pick up and read for six
months! After that it was all down hill:-)

So, I'm sure that everyone here will give you the support and knowledge
that you seek, just listen to what people here have to offer, believe me
I've found that it's well worth it.

IMO the most important thing that you need to master, is the art of
discriminating between fact and fantasy. The whole Japanese
history/martial arts field is awash with loads of pure nonsense,
perpetuated by films, TV and comics, and sadly quite a few people who
should know better! Mind you all studies of history suffers from this
kind of a problem to one degree or another. I for one am for ever
fighting against the "chainmail" demon whenever it raises its head.

Anyway, good luck, especially with learning Japanese, you'll find it
invaluable, that's why I'm still trying to do it!

Regards

Dean

Edy let me clarify my earlier comment. Nate is correct, I was pretty darn
surprised! In fact I (and probably quite a few others) thought you were
joking!

Actually you and I are not so different. I started studying Chinese and
Japanese Porcelain at age 12, and I was working (part time, since I was
still at school) in the Asian Arts dept of a well known Auctioneer by age
16. That said you are the only kid I ever encountered who started studying
something like this seriously like I did at your age.

Perhaps you should also have a look at Antique Japanese Swords, but be
careful you don't get hooked :-)

There are some good discussion groups on the subject as well. If you like I
