Sengoku clans provinces and lands

by edyhiphop

I'm obsessed by the Sengoku period.I have many questions.I couldn't find the answers nowhere so I decided to ask all of you.
1.Who ruled the north of Japan in the Sengoku period????(not Uesugi, north, where is now Aomori prefecture,Iwate prefecture,Akita prefecture....)
2.Who ruled Kii province???(now Wakayama prefecture)
3.Who ruled Hitachi and the neighbouring provinces????(now Ibaraki and Chiba prefecture)
4.Who ruled Hokkaido???

Edy,
I recommend two online resources for this kind of research.

1. Our kind host has a very good set of maps at
www.sengoku-archives.com For instance there is this one that shows the
names of the Daimyo (but not the names of the "kuni") in 1545:
http://www.samurai-archives.com/1545.html
2. There is a great map that shows the outlines of the kuni and
their old names at http://flagspot.net/flags/jp(k.html
3. If I new anything about mapping software I would make for myself
a map which combines the two, plus included modern prefecture
boundaries and names. It's been on my mind for about a year now but
it's one of those projects that I guess I'll get to "one of these
days" (like my translation of the ShinChou KouKi....)

But, recognize that even though the Sengoku period was rather short,
it was quite turbulent. So, the answers to your questions are all
pretty much "it depends on exactly what date you are looking at".
Are you interested in a specific time period/date, or the overall
flow of events during the entire late 15th-16th centuries?

Jay,
I want to find out who ruled the lands from the Muromachi period(starting from 1500) to the end of the Azuchi-Momoyama period in 1600.The map you gave me is excellent,awesome.....Just what I've been looking for.But I'm interested also who ruled the provinces in 1500 and 1600(just like the map you gave me).

So you're looking for the Daimyo active in Mutsu and
Dewa during the Sengoku? Try looking up the Date,
Mogami, Ashina, and Nambu clans. All were active in
the area, the Date being the most dominant.

Simple things such as land development and technological development
can increast koku output greatly. I believe it was Takeda Shingen
who put a lot of work into the water irrigation works of Kai
province, to increase useable farmland and increase output.

Re: Koku Question - other sources?

by thomas5403

D'you know how taxable income from gold and silver (ie mining)
was calculated? And was timber taken into the mix? Quarrying?
And the wealth generated by trade?

Presumably tax was incurred as a percentage of income? Was
there some form of Revenue Service in operation?

Just wondering,

Thomas

Kai was sitting on top of one of Japan's most productive gold mines.
