The only thing I could find is that Kazan Tenno (the 65th emperor)
abdicated the throne on June 23, 986. Hopefully someone else can
find a bit more festive anniversary for you!

Of course the complicating factor is the changing Japanese
calendar. I would imagine that this date of adbication was June
23 as figured at the time, not _our_ June 23, on the Gregorian calenda
r. This is always the fly in the ointment with old Japanese dates.

Well, on the 23rd day of the sixth month of 1590, Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi
Kagekatsu wiped out Hachiôji Castle. Of course, that wasn't actually June 23,
though -- it was actually sometime in May.
