What is the closest modern martial style to what the Samurai

Sean-
There may be some confusion about your question. Are you interested in
the most authentic martial arts practiced today or the most modern
style with traditional roots? I expect it is the former, so suggest you
look for info on the Katori Shinto ryu and the Kashima Shinto ryu.
http://www.koryu.com is a good place to start.
As for swords they still make them the old way see;
http://www.galatia.com/~fer/sword/index.html for more all searches
begin with Rich Steins' site;
http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/nihonto.htm .
Good hunting,
Tom (MSJER)

I would say iaido is the closest because they don't train with armor. Samurai only wore armor in battle. In kendo you have to wear all those guards. I would the modern style for swords nowadays is a samurai sword. They are very decorated (handles, blades and such). They are more fore decorational purposes though.

Re: [samuraihistory] HELLO

hi all,

there is a vibrant tradition of martials arts
practised in kerala, india (malabar of history) called
kalari payattu.
they even claim that systems like karatte evolved from
that... from india to china, going with Budhism, on to
Japan. It may be the usual 'hoiler than thou' stuff
but kalari payattau of kerala is celebrated world wide
and has a great amount of science in it. they are now
practicing it as a medicine, nervous and orthopaedic
problems are treated by the kalari experts, lot of
herbal medicine go in to it. they also know about the
nerve centres of the body called 'marmam'.
traditionally it was the warrior caste nairs who were
leading in this, later during colonisation the Kalaris
were banned, for obvious reasons.
