Choshu han ryu?

by klancesegall

I know that Satsuma han's premier kenjutsu ryu was Jigen ryu, but
was there a predominant ryu in Choshu han? I've looked
through "Choshu in the Meiji Restoration", but didn't see anything
(not that I think it's really concerned with those kind of details
anyways).

Kyle,

May be looking up information on the Mori Clan will
aid you in your search.

I've tried that, but I haven't found anything definitive yet.

Hey Kyle,

May be research on the topic of kenjutsu itself will
help. In my research on the Shimazu clan, I've had to
try a number of research techniques. Like Shimazu
Clan, Satsuma Province, Kagoshima, Ryukyu,
Kyushu,Satsuma Rebelion, Iriki-in Clan and so on.

Hell I've found so realy good information by
researching Korean history ie: the Korean Wars of the
1590's.

Kyle et al-
The upper class members of the Choshu han studied Yagyu Shinkage
Ryu,(Takasugi Shinsaku was a Yagyu Shinkage Ryu swordman...) I haven't
been able to find a ryuha for the Middle and lower classes prior to
Kaei. At which time Saito Shintaro established a Shindo Munen Ryu dojo
there with the permission of the Mori. The aforementioned Katsura
Kogoro was a Shindo Munen ryu adept who became well known in Edo
circles thru his fencing ability...

Hey:
Question: was the style Yagyu Shinkage Ryu the one taught by Tokugawa
swordsmasters the Yagyu clan, from which comes the nebulous Yagyu Jubei? Just
wondering. 8-D

I too came across the info concerning the Shindo Munen ryu. The
Yagyu Shinkage bit is interesting, though... thanks for the help!
