by aoyama_tsukuya

hi..

i need some help. i am supposed to write an argumentative paper for my language class. my chosen topic is:

Which is better, the "original" samurai (those who started the military class) or the "last" samurai (tokugawa to meiji eras)?

My first 'objection'' would be...: were the Tokugawa/Meiji samurai the
last ones? What about WWII ??

Anyway, I would look in the University video department for J.Mass'
lecture titled: "1000 Years of the Samurai." It's on video, some 55
mins, and covers it all.

By the way, I believe many on this list would like to check that out. I
have it on mpeg, but its like 600MB. maybe I can share it on
Limewire... Any other idea? It is, indeed, excellent material.

Better in what sense? Militarily? As individual fighters? Or in having a sense of honor and/or in following Bushido?

I believe that if you go to the "Files" section of this discussion group that
there is a paper comparing the samurai to medieval knights.

I think both topics are very interesting. However if
you do the Meiji Restoration and Samurai Rebelions of
1876-1877 you with have a more defined topic. The
Begining of the Buke and their rise to prominance in
Japan covers much of the Heian Period. Were as the
last years of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Meiji
Restoration and Satsuma Rebelion is more defined and
more accurate information is available. Your talking
several decades as appossed to several centuries.

But its your paper you do what you feel your most
comfortable with.
