These are all rather famous.

I never cease to be amazed. Have you not yet tried doing an internet search on,
say "Gifu Castle"?

KonnichiWa Undergroundrace and welcome, For starters why not search this
site itself? We have a question too although not exactly the same. In Japan,
aren't castles like two story dojos? We mean not like castles in Europe with
high towers and stone walls and moats and stuff? Always wondered. On
InuYasha the villain Naraku(means Hell-so does jigoku) always moves from
castle to castle but they look like weekend retreats or big cottages rather
than castles! Anyone know? Arigato and ja mata-Keiman and Kei.

Lets see,

Odawara was the main Hojo castle. It finally
surrendered to Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590. The Hojo
daimyo and his brother committed seppuku and the
garrison was spared.

Gifu if Im not mistaken was one of Oda Nobunaga's main
castles. Not sure.

As for the other castles I realy can't help ya.

I believe thats bcos InuYasha is a cartoon.. a medium in which the artist can make the castes large to satisfy the viewer's expactions of a castle as they know it..

To whoever is interested about the castle in Kofu, this is what I know. The
castle is located in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, just a short walk from
the train station. I'm sure if you look under castles of Japan and look up
Kofu castle, you might find something there.

I'm new at this and am really interested in the subject. I was born in Kofu
just after the war and spent nine years growing up there before moving to
the states. My mother claims that one of the lords that ruled the castle was
my great -----. grandfather. She claims we were samurai but who knows the
real truth. Our family crest is the same as the Tokugawa clan.

I have played at the castle as a child and have recently visited the castle
two years ago. They are making a concerted effort to restore the place but
it will never be able to bring it back to it's early state.

I don't doubt my mother's story about the samurai line since my cousin has
the family "katana". He received it since he is the son of oldest male in
the Takezawa family. Just before my uncles death, he explained to me his
family has always hidden the swords since the Japanese were never allowed to
own a true katana that was handed down through the generation. Another
family myth?

That's very interesting!!!!Too bad you don't have the family katana. Thanks for the information about the castle!!!!!I like the most the Takeda clan so it's normal to ask for the castle since it's in the homeland of the Takeda clan,Kai province. Thanks!!!!Edy

What do you want to know?

Gifu-jo was known as Inabayama-jo prior to Oda
Nobunaga taking it from the Saito and moving there
from Kiyosu in 1568 (I think that's the year off the
top of my head). It was the capital of the Mino
province. It's up on Inabayama (it's a heck of a walk
to the top, trust me). What else are you looking for?

Inuyama-jo is also in the same area, just north of
Nagoya. It's the only castle still owned by a private
family, and is one of the few that are still original
(most were bombed out in WWII) and is the only one
that is original AND predates the Tokugawa period,
having been constructed in the late 1400's.

Not just any private family... the castle is owned by a descendant of the family
that governed it through the Edo period -- Naruse-dono. It's one of my favorite
castles.

True, true...and it is a great castle to visit. You
actually FEEL like your in a building designed to
withstand a seige, and not some palace, like Nijo-jo
or something.

Exactly. I can't recall if it or Marioka is the oldest extant donjon. Those two
actually have the look and feel of a *real* sengoku castle, rather than an
age-of-peace showplace (e.g., Himeji -- ack, ptui!) or a modern reconstruction
(e.g., Gifu, Kiyosu, etc.).

God, I love that castle.

Oh come on, how can you not like Himeji????? It's not
as "original", in the Sengoku way, but it is an
original POST Sengoku castle, and besides it's better
than Nagoya-jo (How many Daimyo had ELEVATORS
installed????)

Himeji to me is an anachronistic monstrosity. Too large, too overdone, too
showy. Never had a shot fired at it. A showpiece for power and prestige.

I prefer smaller working-man's castles, like Gifu, Inuyama, Morioka, etc. Not
that I would turn my nose up if someone offered me Azuchi, mind you.

Amd as for the elevators... well, heck. I don't like climbing stairs in armour,
either.

LOL! I think Hideyori was snuck out of Osaka castle via the elevator
in the center before being whisked off to Kyushu to live out his
remaining years in seclusion. Bet that was the last place the
attacking Samurai would have thought to look, "Tono, Hideyori
couldn't be in the elevator, it says 'in case of fire, use stairs'!"

That would be an excellent point.

Taking the cowardly elevator would be on par to Ishida's escaping Ieyasu's
clutches dressed as a woman.

Um, well, YEAH...I still think it's gorgeous, and it's
not ferrous/concrete!

Can't say I'd complain either...

My host-mother and I had an interesting conversation
the first time I went to Nagoya-jo. She told me it was
a reconstruction, and asked me with a smirk if I knew
why...I laughed, smiled back, and said, "yeah, we
bombed the heck out of it....do you know WHY??" I'm
just glad we could joke about it--she's pretty cool.

AH HA! So it wasn't REALLY a secret room...just an
elevator...Nice...

Of course, if he had an elevator, there must have been
an erebetaa gaaru there to bow and push the buttons,
like in Mitsukoshi..."Shita ni mairimasu"

Hey.
I know this will sound like dumb question, and it probably is. Was
Odani(-jo? Am I right on suffix?) ever rebuilt? Just asking. :-) Take care,
y'all.

Thanks.Useful information. Can't anyone find some info about Iwadono-jo????(actually,has it ever existed???).Edy(undergroundrace@...)

Nate Ledbetter <ltdomer98@...> wrote:What do you want to know?

No, Odani-jo was never rebuilt. And no, it wasn't near
Himeji--it was on the southern side of Lake Biwa, in
Omi.

And you should check out the new restrooms in Osaka-jo... Plastered
with Italian marble... That guy Hideyoshi: quite stylish, for a country
bumpkin...

But they 'shot' the mighty 'SHOGUN' there... ;o)

Yeah, it's actually a great castle to make movies: brand new, large
enough to afford different takes from different angles, and not too far
from Kyoto's Eiga-mura...

Himeji-jo looks beautiful on a clear day, but I might agree with Tony:
it lacks the atmosphere of the smaller, but somehow tougher sengoku
castles.

Anyway, has anybody visited Matsuyama-jo in Shikoku? It's on the top of
a hill in the middle of the town, really-really nice.

I was there about 8 years ago on a castle-hopping trip. Went to Kochi-jo,
Imabari-jo, Uwajima-jo. Have you have been to Taga Jinja in Uwajima? Still
have a crick in my neck. (if you don't get the joke you have never been
there and until you do you won't understand).

My one chance to go to Osaka-jo it was being
refurbished, probably with those restrooms (I hear
that 16th century Italian marble is hard to keep up).
Hopefully I'll get a chance to rectify that.

Matsuyama-jo is quite nice, and very original looking,
with the faded wood and all. My favorite is still
Inuyama though.
