I did see a documentary on the history channel a year or two ago. It was
not particularly scholarly, but of some use as an introductory look at the
development of the Japanese warrior over time. The documentary included
excerpts pf interviews with a few of the "biggies": Stephen Turnbull, G.
Cameron Hurst and Karl Friday. I did a search on the history channel
website and came up with the following:
In Search of History:
Samurai Warrior
Price: $19.95
http://www.historychannel.com
This seems a bit steep of a price from what I remember of the content, but
perhaps someone else on the list could give a more detailed accounting. One
caveat, I seem to recall an email conversation with Prof. Friday in which he
intimated that some of his statements were taken a bit out of context.
Cheers,
Shannon

There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness. And
there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can dive alike down into the
blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the
sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge is
in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is
still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar.
