C12th Japan

by Yoshitsune Lion

Hi, I was hoping someone could tell me the best resource available for
information about 12th century Japan - particulary 1160 - 1190. I am looking
for detailed information about living conditions, clothing, formal practices
- eg rituals etc, food, etc.
Basically I am looking for what it would have looked and felt like during
that period. So far in all my research I have been unable to find a clear
description/image for this period.

Thankyou

Hello,

I would recommend a couple books. The first of these
would give you a great look at this time period but
can be a bit of a pain to get a hold of. "The heike
and or Genji Monogatori" (The tales of the heike and
genji.) This book can come in two forms singly
concentrating on each story or as a compilation. The
Heike Monogatori is a fiction work but describes
clothing and court life succesfully during this
period. The genji Monogatori is a "True" account with
some colorful legends thrown in. Both give great
descriptions of the period. (This book was written in
the 1100's)

Next, I could recommend a Osprey Military Book. Part
of the Osprey Elite Series. "The Samurai 200-1500ad
gives great color prints of the time period and
describes the times, history, clothing, tactics, and
people.

Lastly, The Samurai source book can be a great cource
to pick up quick info regarding any time period in
Japanese history in which the word "Samurai or Bushi"
was used.

Also, Michigan States Japanese Studies group has put
out some detailed books regarding this and other
periods in Japanese history. Sometimes concentrating
on particular provinces and or villages.

I hope this could be of some help.

A book I'd reccomend, even though it is a 'modern' book,
is "Patriotism" by Yukio Mishima. It is a fairly quick read in
regards to an act of seppuku between a military man and his wife. It
has great imagery, and very interesting even with the fairly simple
plot. An interesting look into the 'samurai mentality'. This book
is available at Amazon.com also, and is pretty cheap, considering how
much most books cost these days.

Books such as the 'Tale of the Heike' (Helen Craig McCullough-Stanford Press)
and also possibly the 'Taiheike' (Same translator..) could be used to get a
general start on the life in the 12th century in Japan.. I have also seen an
older book entitled 'Life in Japan...during the samurai eras' but cannot
remember the author. (Give me a couple of days and I can find out for you..)
Also the 'Hojoki' or 'An account of my hut' by Kamo no Chomei describes a
more general account of the times covering the Gempei wars and after,
focussing more on the general populace rather than the Samurai and the
effects that the natural disasters of the time brought about. There are
undoubtedly more than these but the titles above would give a good general
overview for you...Good Luck.

If anybody on this list or anywhere knows of a copy of the film of this
story starring Mishima Himself, I should be very interested in obtaining a
copy.

Well here is my two yen worth of books about this period

Heavenly Warriors by William Wayne Farris
The Ancient Samurai by Makoto Sugawara
A Tale of Flowering Fortunes translated by William & Helen McCullough
The World of the Shining Prince by Ivan Morris
Insei by H Cameron Hurst
Daily Life in Japan at the time of the Samurai by Louis Frederic

If you can read Japanese I would also suggest the Visual Nihon Rekishi
series by DeAgostini. This is a great graphic resource, chock full of pix
and CG recreations that would give a good visual depiction of this period.

To Byrant-Dono:
Just out of curiosity are you planning any more books. I have read four by
you, The Samurai, The Early Samurai, The Samurai 1550-1600, and Sekigahara.

I've got a couple I'd like to do, but grad school is sucking up inordinate
amounts of time. I have to get back to Japan for some time to do some research,
so next time I'm planning on going I'll try to coordinate it with Osprey's
needs.

In the meantime, you can always read my web stuff (which is aimed at
reenactors, but still historically viable):
