The "definitive" bit may be a problem, I am not aware of one at present (but
then my Japanese is almost negligible!)!

However the "red" series Nihon Gunzo Rekishi Series by Gakken have several
volumes covering the two personalities. They are: Number 5 - Takeda Shingen,
Number 6 - Shingen Battles and 24 Generals and number 8 - Uesugi Kenshin.

I will have a quick look in my "library" to see if there are any
references....

Hope this helps,

Regards,
Rod Johnson

I actually already own all of those and more, which are good for a
solid overview and various tidbits, but I'm trying to figure out
which biographies are good, kind of like a "John Adams" by David
McCullough, only on Takeda Shingen and in Japanese ;)
(I considered buying the Koyo Gunkan until I found out it was a multi-
volume set that goes for something like $400...)

Re: Rekishi Gunzo books - where?

by kitsuno

You can either get them at your local Japanese bookstore (Kinokuniya,
etc.), or you can order them from www.amazon.co.jp
I've ordered books from there before. The books show up in about a
week, and it is 1500 yen for shipping (to the USA). Never had a
problem with them. If you can read Japanese, it is no problem, if
you can't, it might take a few minutes to figure it out, but there is
an english version of the page, it is just a matter of finding the
link. It works just like amazon.com, but you have to create
an 'identity' for the amazon.co.jp - your amazon.com id doesn't
transfer. but it has all the exact same functions as amazon.com -
package tracking, etc. The only possible problem you might come
accross is that you need to be able to type the japanese into the
search engine to find the japanese books you want.

Here is a search for 'rekishi gunzo series' on amazon.co.jp -- there
are 207 items, so you'll have to browse for what you're looking for,
and probably have to cut and paste this URL into your browser for it
to work properly:

Oops, looks like that won't work no matter how you put it in. Try
pasting this into the amazon.co.jp search engine (you need to have
japanese fonts installed): 歴史ŒQ`œƒVリーƒY

Sorry to flood this list, but it looks like the Japanese won't even
post correctly...! If you have Japanese IME for windows installed,
just type "rekishigunzo" into the amazon.co.jp search engine (in
Japanese) and that should work.

Hi

the book shop at St pauls was called Books Nippon. I
went to to it last year to find it closed along with
all the shops in that row. they had riped the shops
out for reconstruction. They didnt have any relocation
details which was a shame.

That shop was really cheap.

There was also the Japan centre near Soho, you would
sometimes pay almost double the yen price there. I
wont shop there now
