Biography of Takeda Shingen

by kitsuno

Can anyone tell me if there is a 'definitive' biography of Takeda
Shingen and/or Uesugi Kenshin in Japanese, and if so, the title and
author?

Thanks in advance.

The "definitive" bit may be a problem, I am not aware of one at present (but then my Japanese is almost negligible!)!

However the "red" series Nihon Gunzo Rekishi Series by Gakken have several volumes covering the two personalities. They are: Number 5 - Takeda Shingen, Number 6 - Shingen Battles and 24 Generals and number 8 - Uesugi Kenshin.

I will have a quick look in my "library" to see if there are any references....

Hope this helps,

Regards,
Rod Johnson

I actually already own all of those and more, which are good for a
solid overview and various tidbits, but I'm trying to figure out
which biographies are good, kind of like a "John Adams" by David
McCullough, only on Takeda Shingen and in Japanese ;)
(I considered buying the Koyo Gunkan until I found out it was a multi-
volume set that goes for something like $400...)

Hi there. it's me again.
Just wondering something. I've read about the "24 Generals of Takeda
Shingen." Who were they? (Both names and collectively?) Thanks.

Later,
T

"Takeda Shingen" by Nitta Jiro is,at least, the most popular novel
concerning Shingen. The previous NHK Taiga drama was based on it.It is
very likely that you have already read it though.

Thanks, I haven't read it. Is that a fictionalized novel? That
would probably be interesting, too, if it is. I'll check it out.

Are there any biographies of Nobunaga, Toyotomi, Tokugawa or Takeda in
English? Just wondering, b/c I'm thinking about reading one and am open to
and looking for suggestions.

That's true, or at least unverifiable. I just recently read that
according to one source (上杉"N•ˆ) the famous attack on Shingen by
Kenshin at the fourth battle of Kawanakajima where shingen blocked
with his fan, was actually made by Kenshin's "kagemusha", Arakawa Izu
no Kami. In another source (–k‰zŒR‹L), Shingen apparently met with
the monk Tenkai, and told him that the man who fought shingen was
HIS "kagemusha". So for all anyone knows, they were BOTH kagemusha,
and Kenshin and Shingen were somewhere else completely.

Yup, you've got at least two on Ieyasu - one by A. L. Sadler and one
by someone who's name I can't think of off the top of my head (conrad
totman??). At least one on Hideyoshi, by Mary Berry (it also has a
lot of info on Nobunaga - this is one of my favorite books), and only
one on Nobunaga that I know of by Jeroen Lamers, which I haven't read
(and probably won't until the price drops way below its current $60
mark).

You should be able to find any of them on Amazon.com. Then there is
the sort of outdated overview of the 16th century by Sansom, but it
is well written and an interesting read.

Oops - below I meant to say Shingen told Tenkai that his 'kagemusha'
fought KENSHIN.

I just noticed I have the first two Takeda Katsuyori manga novels by
Nitta Jirou sitting on my shelf. I should probably read them ;)

Yes the other bio of Tokugawa Ieyasu is by Conrad Totman. Another older bio
of Hideyoshi is by Walter Dening originally written in 1888 and revised
several times by him and his son. Its a semifictionized account that owes
alot to 'Taiko-ki'.

Hi There

There is a wonderful biography of Toyotomi - in pictures with English subtitles. It is a facinating work comprising of over 600 Kunioshi B/W prints in about A4 size covering his full life (and more!). The copy I have is taken from the original Japanese Woodcut edition "Ehon Toyotomi Kunkoki" and published in 1975. I managed to borrow a copy from the British Library long time back - and dare I say that I photocopied several pages.. When I saw a copy for sale in Ken Trotman's List just over five years ago at £70 I jumped at it.... Well that's the overview, so the title is:

"The Pictorial Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi - the Unifier of Japan" - W.M.Hawley 1975.... and well worth the search!!

Rod

Hi Again,

I have two versions of the Sadler work on Tokugawa - the first is an early editon from 1937 but the second version is a Tuttle Edition. "The Maker of Modern Japan - The Life of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu" - A.L.Sadler; Charles E Tttle Co. 1981 (ISBN 0-8048-1297-7). The Conrad Totman book is "Tokugawa Ieyasu: Shogun" ; Heian International Publishing 1983.

Hope this little extra helps...

as for the nobunaga bigraphy, "Japonius Tyrannous", I've had it ordered
from Amazon since before Christmas and it keeps getting pushed back.
this really makes me worry that they can't get it because i know the
publisher of the book is going out of business.
that's what happens when they charge sixty bucks......
