research project

by erikb_02809

Hi everybody. I'm a history & anthroplogy student doing a project on
how the peace of the tokugawa era affected what could be
called "samurai culture". If anyone could provide me with any
links , web addressess, info, insights, etc, please email me at
erikb_02809@.... I've got a martial arts background and am
familiar with basic samurai terminolgy, so I don't need any help
explaining to me the difference between a wakizashi and a katana, I
need help finding info on advanced stuff like japanese culture
during the tokugawa era, etc. thanks _ Eric

This book looks like it might be applicable:
http://www.yale.edu/yup/books/049676.htm

ARMED MARTIAL ARTS OF JAPAN
Swordsmanship and Archery
G. C. Hurst III

It goes into the history of the Japanese martial arts, how they
changed during the tokugawa period, and were 'sportified' (to use an
non-scholarly term) by westernization. and coming from Yale, I have
to assume it will be a worthy read, and not, as some have termed, a
book of "martial-arts mythology". If anyone has read it, I'd be
interested to hear about it.

You need to get and read "Taming the Samurai" by Ikegami. The entire subject
of her book is just that very topic.
