Biographical Dictionaries

by kitsuno

I've always been a huge fan of biographical dictionaries - Is there a
cheaper version of the Shinsengumi Dai Jinmei Jiten? The Muromachi and
Sengoku Dai Jitens also have a compact cheaper version, I'm hoping
someone here might know of something similar for the Shinsengumi. I
hope my constant questions aren't too obnoxious.

Thanks!

Not sure. The full-blown serious work "Meiji Ishin Jinmei Jiten" has just
about everyone you could think of from the Bakumatsu and then some,
including Shinsengumi, but as far as a more compact version of what you've
just referenced I'm not sure. There are some websites that have archived
what seem to be full rosters and a great deal of bios, but as I have not had
the chance to look through all of them end to end I can not say if they are
thorough.

Yes, I've got a few Biographical Dictionaries for the Shinsengumi. They are somewhat
helpful but to tell you the truth, I generally don't recommend them.

What's wrong with them? Just curious, because at the moment I can't
drop $200 on those dictionaries (although I'd like to).

Nice! A book I can actually afford. My amazon.co.jp "wish list" is
getting longer every day...
