The New Samurai Archives "Wiki"

by kitsuno

We've been working for about a month on getting the new Samurai
Archives wiki ready (Known as the SamuraiWiki) - and I'm putting it
live right now. Here is the URL:

http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/

We really need editors to get in there and start adding content. We
already have hundreds of entries, but since the intent is to make this
the most concise and detailed Wiki on pre-20th century Japan, we'll
need plenty of help. Check the "current events" page for a list of
what we most need:
http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.php?title=Current_events

Before jumping in and editing, please read through the sections on
correct editing and formatting:
http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.php?title=Main_Page#Editing_Wiki_Articles_.28Important.29

This is the same software that Wikipedia uses, so the potential for a
great history wiki is limitless - and least of all we have to outdo
wikipedia's sometimes sorry attempt at Japanese history articles. If
you know anyone with any sort of specialty, be it Samurai movies or
history books, let them know about the Wiki - there is a place for all
aspects of Japanese history here.

Thanks,

C.West

That is really great news... Im very pleased to see this concept taking form. I have been disappointed with the articles on wikipedia in the past. I did contribute an article once, but in general I didnt feel it was worth it.

I would definately be willing to add some of my seppuku research when my thesis is complete, if that is something of interest.

I apologize. I'm supposed to be adding in biographies of the 47 ronin. I've been incredibly busy at work (and other things), and thus no time yet.

No problem. We're rock solid for biographies for the Sengoku period,
but we are sorely, sorely lacking much in the way of the Edo period
(47 Ronin, Shinsengumi, and so on) so we really need to get the
'experts' on those periods moving ;-)

Unfortunately, I can find very little proven factual data. Most of the data on each of the 47 ronin is speculative. It's actually missing on most of them. I can glean a little bit on Oishi Kuranosuke, Horibe Yasubei, and of course Fuwa Kazuemon (about whom I've written two stories for Samurai Archives).

The main source, printed in English, for biographical details is in the edition I have of Kuniyoshi's prints. And much of what is printed in here is legend rather than fact.

Heh, when it comes to history, that seems to often be the case (Uh,
Musashi anyone?)
I think as long as there is a clear distinction between the known and
the theorized/myth, it is still good history.

Kitsuno, maido.
I have finished today my MA thesis on Yamada Nagamasa and the
Japanese who went to Siam in the 17th century. It is full of material
that was never published in English, and my chair (Dr. Varley) liked
it a lot.
Let me know if you think that Yamada Nagamasa, nihonmachi, shuinsen,
and other topics related to my field of research. can be part of your
project. BTW.
All the best, and -as promised- I will return actively in the mailing
list after I rest a few days (I still have to defend my thesis)

It sounds great - we could use your help - I don't suppose you're back
in Hawaii yet? I've grown awful fond of "Magoo's" :-P

Yep, I am in Hawai'i. I needed to forget what Magoo's was, but as I
turn in my thesis tomorrow I might begin to remember... remember...
remember...
I need to know what you need exactly for the Wiki, since I am too
lazy to read the instructions there. I also suppose a few of my
colleagues might want to cooperate as well. Can you mail me in private?

Even there, I have to speculate and deduct from what seems logical to me. Because all of Kuniyoshi's inscriptions on his prints are written as fact.

Take a look at the Miyamoto Musashi entry for an idea about the myth
vs. fact thing. Musashi's life is mostly myth as well, or at least a
lot of speculation.

As an aside - for anyone interested in contributing, all you do is
create an account, and you can then start editing.
