samurai sword question.

by blesets

Dear,
I need some information about samurai sword, hope somebody can give me
information or links.
1. Is there any diamond in the cover of samurai? It's for sharpen.
2. Is it true one of samurai type when in the cover is flexible after
we take off from cover will be harder/tight after a second? (some
people call the belt samurai sword, but just doesn't make sense for
me, physics reason)

Thank you, I am poor about samurai, sorry.

Good afternoon.
1 I do not understand what you mean about diamond ???
2 The scabard or properly named "saya" is usually made
of wood and as far as I have seen, it is not flexible.

Best regards.

diamond, or something for sharpen, so when this sword is take of it's
automaticly
sharpen (sorry i don't know about this, but some people belieave this.

Just a minor quibble, but there is no sword referred to as "a
samurai". I assume you mean "a katana".

:-) I know this is funny but it happens in my country too. I've been meeting
with some (many) people in my country who call a katana as a samurai :-) and
I've been telling them that it's wrong to call a sword as a samurai. :-) but
they keep saying that. I guess this ignorance don't only happen in my
country :-)

Thanks.

A MAJOR quibble - if this "diamond sharpening" feature as described is meant to
refer to traditional Japanese swords (i.e., katana, tachi, wakizashi, tanto etc
etc) made and worn before 1876, then it is simply nonsense. This feature
belongs in the realm of the modern self-sharpening kitchen knife on the wall...

good afternoon.
I do not know if I am lost or not. Perhaps you mean
the "Koi Guchi" ( the opening in the scabbard where
you place the point of the blade in order to resheat
it ). Some Koi Guchi has diamond shapes depending on
the shape of the transversal cut of the blade.
but it is not made to sharp the blade. even worst,
if you are not really good trained in how to properly
draw a sharp blade, you will start cutting the inside
of the scabbard until the last thing you will cut is
your hand. remember scabbards are made of wood...
best regards to all.

Hi,

I'm Japanese and I'm a descendant of a samurai. I'm surprised that a
katana is sometimes called as a samurai!

Some western people think a katana is something special weapon. But a
katana is just a sword. It is true that a katana is well forged and it
can cut many things.

A samurai is originally a person who guards aristocrats. They like
knights. Then they got power and fight each other for concession. Then
they became worriers and they always have katanas.

In a word, a katana is a sword and a samurai is a knight.

Barry et al -
The self-sharpening "Samurai belt-sword" is a common myth,
perpetuated by folks selling crap, usually in South Asia. I believe
the first respondent to the post did the greatest service to the
young man, by directing him to the Japanese Sword Index, where there
is an article on fakes. http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/nihonto.htm
Anyone reading this ought to read that, and more on that site, keep
yourself and your friends safe from hucksters...

It's only mildly discouraged unless it gets out of hand.

Good morning.
In fact, Koi Guchi means mouth of carp.
And it is not permited, but as both of us are budokas;
it is our duty to erradicate ignorance of our martial
art.

Best regards to all.
