The last samurai battle?

by brettbronson

Can somebody tell me exactly where in Japan was the last known samurai
battle and is there a shrine etc. to honour this?

Regards,
Bushidoforever.

Brett -
It will depend alot on your perspective. Some say 1877 in Kysushu,
when Saigo Takamori and forces loyal to him fought a losing series of
skirmishes against the new Imperial army.
Others would say Hakodate 1869 where the last of the samurai loyal
to the Tokugawa house fought against those trying to create a new
modern state, that would spell the end of the samurai as a class.
Still others would say Shimabara 1637 where battlefield tactics of
the Sengoku period were last employed by large samurai armies.
The purists will say the winter battle of Osaka 1615 or Sekigahara
1600 where Tokugawa Ieyasu secured his hold on the nation and sealed
the fate of samurai as warrior, ushering in 250 years of Samurai as
administrator.
There are indeed monuments and shrines at many of these spots, which
you choose to recognize as the "last battle" will be dependant on
whether it is samurai technology, samurai as a class or samurai as an
ideal that you are after...

Dear Tomu san,

A very nice explanation mate. Very nice. I would come down on the side of the
last of the samurai as a class fighting a battle where the weight of history and
ancestors imbued the warriors with belief in a cause, however faded and perhaps
jaded. Which puts me in 1877 in Kyushu with Saigo Takamori. Given what I have
read about the man, I see see a loose parallel with Kusunoki Masashige's doomed
stand for the Southern Court.

I would also have to cast my vote for Saigo Takamori.

I am sure you know the book "The Nobility of Failure", wherein the
lives of both men among others are detailed. I am a big fan of both
men and Japanese tales of "mono no aware." I am not sure Kusunoki was
doomed from the start but believe that Saigo knew that he was and
that was why he spent his strength on the siege of Kumamoto castle.
