Best starter books for early Sengoku era

by kclark747

Hello everyone. New poster here.
I am looking for some good books detailing the Sengoku era.
I don't know a lot of history so some lower level basics would be good
as well, but I would like at least one good in depth book.
I will be trying to get the books through libraries, so rare books are
probably out of my reach.

What would some good starting points be?

Arigatou gozaimasu.

Osprey has a number of short books on individual battles and specific topics--a few of which were written by Anthony Bryant. If you are looking for very general study, you might want to read some of Stephen Turnbull's books or a Japanese history like Sansom's A History of Japan: 1334-1615. Otherwise, you may want to start from the beginning of the period with something like Mary Elizabeth Berry's The Culture of Civil War in Kyoto. It definately isnt beginner level reading, but an excellent book nonetheless.

Some people have major issues with him (like
plagiarizing), but for basic Sengoku stuff, Turnbull
is the place to start. "Samurai Warriors" and "Samurai
Warlords" are both decent, if repetitive at times.
