It wasn't one of my favorites, I have read a little bit about them and
they seem like a bunch of opportunistic thugs to me. The series seems to
reflect this, it was hard for me to empathize with the main characters.
On top of that, I don't think the acting was that good. I hope the VCDs
were cheap.

Depending on what period of Japanese history you like, I might recommend
either the more recent Yoshitsune, or the older one about Hideyoshi.

I agree, it was terrible.

Even the best of the Taiga drams will take liberties with history if it
makes a better story or add details that are not documented. So enjoy
them as entertainment and not as history.

It's quite cheap though. So I will take it as entertainment only.

I don't have particular interest in any particular period, I just like to
watch taiga drama with accuracy in Japanese history, however I would be
grateful if you could recommend me any other more interesting and
historically accurate taiga drama

Taiga Drama are the yearly NHK 50 episode historical
dramas shown every Sunday at 8 PM (and rebroadcast
through the week on the BS channels, if you have
cable). Do you specifically mean Taiga Drama, or are
you meaning to ask about jidai geki, which is the term
for any period historical drama? NHK currently has 3
jidai geki series running, but the current Taiga
Drama, Komyo ga Tsuji, is only one of them (and the
lesser quality of the two I've seen. I'm still
recording it, though.)

Yes I meant any period historical drama. Do they have English substitle?
Thank you.

The ones broadcast in Japan don't--there would be no
point in putting English subtitles on programs for a
Japanese audience. However I know you can find them
with English subtitles on the Japanese cable channels
broadcast in the United States.

I heard that we can download the NHK taiga dramas for free, is that true? If
so, where should I go (url address)?

Possibly off of a file-sharing server like Kazaa or
bittorrent, if you can find it. You certainly can't
get them for free from NHK--50 episode Taiga dramas
sell for around $300-$400 US dollars.

By the way, is there any taiga drama that depicts the 47 ronin story? If
there is, what is the title?

You might want to try EBAY Auctions. I recently found a few of the
NHK TV series shows with English subtitles. The prices vary but all
were much cheaper than here. If you want to buy a TV series here in
Japan you must pay at a minimum $300.

Also you can run a web search for Japanese Drama.

Good luck!

Only about 6...I'll see if I can dig up the titles,
but a good bet is "Chushingura" is one or 5 of them.
