taiga drama - shinsengumi

by samurai_iaijutsu

I've just bought taiga drama - Shinsengumi VCDs, however the VCDs haven't
arrived yet. I am wondering if anyone here has seen this drama, then I need
their opinion about this drama particularly about the historical events in
this drama, are they accurate enough or not? as it's said that the drama
depicts the historical events during the Tokugawa era started from 1854 -
1869.

P.S. I am an Indonesian and never went to collage, I studied English by my
self so please don't be too harsh about my spelling and grammar. :-)

Thanks.

Totok,

While NHK's saigo dramas are well known for accuracy, Shinsengumi was a
departure from their usual high standards. In an attempt to widen the viewer
base, NHK used pop stars instead of traditional actors in at least one of
the roles and "modified" accepted history. This did have the desired effect
of increasing viewers, but there was an uproar among japanese historians
over the actual content.

I havent seen the drama yet, but I heard it was rather good. However, if you are looking for historical information on the Shinsengumi... You should read Shinesengumi: The Shongun's Last Samurai Corps by Romulus Hillsborough. I couldnt put it down. Hillsborough has written at least three fantastic samurai-related books.

VCDs are Video Compact Discs. Movies on standard cds. Low quality and most
movies require 2 discs. Fairly common in Asia.

Re: taiga drama - shinsengumi

I have DVD box set of the series.
This series was ranked 2nd of the most popular Taiga drama.
http://ranking.goo.ne.jp/ranking.php?C1=022&C2=nhk_taigadrama

The script writer Mitani Kouki is comedy writer, so the drama is
pretty funny.
The historical accuracy is 85%(my estimate)
He added some fictional episodes like
-Kondou and Hijikata and Sakamoto Ryouma and Katsura Kogoro were
friends
-Saitou Hajime saved by Kondou in Edo
-Kondou's wife to confront Kondou's mistress
etc

Episode of Yamanami's seppuku was really really sad.
NHK received hundreds of "save Yamanami petitions" from viewers.
Viewers also requested NHK to make following episode for Hijikata
which was aired in January 3rd.
