Well I saw a mini-series on him I think he was a great man. All samurai had to be killers that was their job. No such thing as a dirty trick in a fight.

HI

If its an old show then I have seen it and its crap.

Some members of the list know I belong to the Bujinkan
and Hayes is an ex-member also.

His organisation is such a wonderful group of people
that I had to issue an harrassment warning to the UK
rep for his behaviour the other week towards me.

He seems to have taken offense to me stating
publically on Budo forums that Hayes is not permitted
and is accepting cash fraudulently by issuing Bojustu
licenses with the school name Kukishinden Ryu on them.

Even the Bujinkan Japanese shihan with Menkyo Kaiden
are not permitted to do that so why he feels the need
to do it I cant see why, maybe money but i am only
speculating there.

I wouldnt believe much Hayes says

Hmmm to many hero worship musashi, he is almost robin hood like in the stories that surrond him. No doubt he was a great swordsman, writer, artist, gardner etc etc.

yet when you take it all in context what was his overall impact on the times, no doubt he was well respected but his life must have been a somewhat empty one, there have been many equally skilled swordmen and to be honest far greater samurai who's impact was far greater in a historical context, if musashi had'nt wrote his teachings down , would he be as revered as he is today, and as mentioned before look at how he is used in video games, comics etc and is given a pop icon status, this only gives him a mythic like status that simply was'nt true.

Personally I find the the campaigns of someone like Kato Kiyomasa or others far more important and equally heroic then that of musashi, whos hermit like lifestyle I find somewhat tragic.

Coincidence, I was only reading about him this morning in Samurai Sourcebook by Turnbull and was thinking exactly the same thing as Nate with reference to the swordsmanship and ability to fight in a battle, 19 single combats if I recall...

Must now do a little more reading on him if I can find some information.

Even if we strip away most of the fantasy tales that where weaved
around him, and believe me those are countless, he remains a
remarcable man.

About every movie or book thats has come out is based for much on
fiction, even Yoshikawa's thick book (the Japanese version is a few
thousand pages thicker then that we got). Its a bit of a King Arthur
myth that rolled on and got bigger in time.

But the man has excisted, clan records mention him, works of his art
are still on display today. And most people cant deny that he was one
of the greatest warriors alive, he was not just skilled with weapons,
he also understood how to manipulate his enemies psyche to his
advantage. His skills in woodcarfing and inkt painting where very good.
He was an exceptional warrior, in many ways, and although he did not
seek it, and only served a few years under a Lord, i think he is one
of the few who could claim the title of best samurai.

He has my vote *grins*
