by depos42300

hello,
I have a few ?'s for you that would really help me out in my never ending samurai armour project. I'll keep it simple.(or at least i'll try)

1.) Mimi ito(edge lacing) - does it have to be a different color than the rest of the primary lacing to be considered authentic? or can it be the same color?

2.) What is the reasoning behind the odoshi being slightly wider than the dehaba? &,...How far should each scale overlap the other?(for a very narrow hon kozan,3/8" wide 2&1/4" height ,one set a vertical holes(though i'm still working out how many holes,...my first try was a disaster,...lol)

3.) I've heard that Kohire are only found on Tosei Gusoku. Would it be correct if I put Kohire on a Dangae Do? How are the winglets attached to the watagami?

Well,...that should do for now. I have a lot more ?'s to ask but these will keep me busy for a while. Thank you very much for your time.
Thank you,
Mark DePasquale

Hi Mark,

>1.) Mimi ito(edge lacing) - does it have to be a different color than the rest
>of the primary lacing to be considered authentic? or can it be the same color?

Yes it can be the same colour. But if you want your kit to look truly
spectacular, a MIMI-ITO in a multicolour "woodpecker" braid really
helps. You can get it from:

http://www.toraba.com

Go to his "Lacing" section on his "Restoration" pages.

>2.)

I'll leave this question to Tony, as I'm out of my depth with early
armour construction.

>3.) I've heard that Kohire are only found on Tosei Gusoku.

Although they appear on earlier style armours such as DOU-MARU, I think
most are 1500's onwards, but I could be wrong, Tony? They certainly
appear much earlier than the similarly constructed TATE-ERI (armoured
collar) which turn up in the late 16th century and become increasing
popular during the EDO era.

> Would it be correct
>if I put Kohire on a Dangae Do?

As this "style" is created using TOSEI-GUSOKU armour construction
styles, it shouldn't be a problem authenticity wise.

>How are the winglets attached to the watagami?

They are sewn to it, through pairs of holes along the edge of the plate.
A minimum of 3 sets is necessary, 5 is common. The holes in a pair are
about 4-6mm apart, measured centre to centre and no more than about 1mm
in diameter. They are mounted on the underside of the plate on top of
the lining. Sometimes they are built in to the lining along with the
TATE-ERI, and then sewn in the same way to the DOU.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dean,
Thank you for answering my ?'s(1 & 3). I have looked at the Toraba page and it is excellent. Thank you again. Tony,...if your reading this,....can you please respond to my second ?. It's been a stopper in my project & will really help me out a lot.
Thanks again,
Mark

First, lace tends to narrow a bit when under load. Second assuming your
overlap question is about the hon kozane sections on a dangae dou, 50%.

Dean,

Did your friend ever get the kusazuri situation for his yukinoshita dou
resolved? I'm producing Sendai dou now and another set of kusazuri is
do-able.

No, he never got back to me. He's a medic in the services and is hopping
around rather a lot at the moment, but I'll have another go at trying to
get hold of him and I'll get back to you.

At some point soon I need to talk to you (off list) about making some
other bits and pieces for myself etc., but it'll have to wait for a
couple of months as I've got way too much "stuff" going on at the
moment, including our first true largish scale historical display at the
end of August and our second two weeks later at the Will Adams Festival,
Gillingham, Kent, England.

Anyway cheers for the moment.

The Will Adams Festival 2005

by deanwayland

Hi Paul, and anyone else who would be interested.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but things have been a little crazy
around here recently due to preparations for and recovery from various
public shows. Anyway, regarding the Will Adams Festival.

This is a one day event run by Medway Council in Gillingham, Kent on
Saturday the 17th September 2005. It starts at 10:45 and goes on until
circa 17:00. Activities are centred upon the Black Lion Leisure Centre
and Gillingham's High Street (just to the south).

Sorry to say that the folks at Medway still haven't set up a dedicated
website for the event. And even if you Google, you still tend only to
get references to just past events created by attendees. It is so badly
promoted that outside of its local area, no one has ever heard of it,
neither Stephen Turnbull, or Ian Bottomley or the rest of the crew at
Leeds were aware of the event when I mentioned it during the recent
Shogun exhibition, and it's been going for five years! Indeed I didn't
find out about it myself until last year, and it was I who had first
approached them back in '99 to suggest it for the year 2000 and the
400th anniversary of Adam's arrival in Japan. Incidentally I've just
found out that even the Japanese Embassy now has it listed as a "new"
event for 2005.

There's numerous demonstrations and displays, food, music etc. both in
and out of doors. I and a handful of my group will be putting on a small
display, so if you manage to get along to it, come and say hi at the
Fight School's "SHOGUN" stand, just look for a JINMAKU (camp curtain)
and a collection of banners near the Leisure Centre.
