Turnbull Ninja Book

by kurotatsunoshi

Turnbull's book is quite good and likely the best source on the subject
matter in English you are likely to find. While it does have quite a
few pictures of "black PJ clad assassins" and other ahistorical ninja
lore like the straight sword, this is done to illustrate how the ninja
myth wormed its way into popular culture. No book on ninja would be
complete without addressing the wild stories that have sprung up around
them.

Also remember Turnbull has written two ninja books; the earlier
Firebird hardcover (or its reprint) is better than the Osprey book.

Have all of you read Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa (silly
question, I know) near the end his students and
Matahachi meet a samurai posing as an herbal merchant.
His mission is to get someone to kill Tokugawa using
someone else to shoot him with a gun. Does this sound
like a "real" shanobi mission?

HI

if you really want to read one or the other then I
suggest the previous book.

The new one is more like a comic for kids than a book
anyone can use for any form of research

Hi

as I said in my previous post

this book is not anything at all close to finding any
thing to do with the ninja.

Waste of money, and I would say Turnbulls worst book
so far

Paul
