Like what, welfare? The samurai United Way? I don't
think there are any telethons where the proceeds go to
poor, out of work samurai.

What I'm assuming you mean to ask is "are there any
organizations that attempt to continue on the values,
traditions, or training of the samurai?"

If so, the answer is yes--look for a
kendo/kenjutsu/iaido/iaijutsu instructor near you.
That's not exhaustive, but a decent place to start, I
suppose.

Hi.

That will depend on what you mean... If you want to
live as a samuray, the best option is to learn a
traditional martial art. I sugest Iaido, Kendo or
Aikido. Then, do your research : learn and live with
samuray principles such as bushido code.
I suggest you to read books like The code of the
Samuray of Daidoji Yuzan, Hagakure and Bushido of
Inazo Nitobe.

Bye.

Re: [samuraihistory] I'm new

HI

Iaido, Aikido, Kendo are not traditonal arts they are
Gendai Budo and are watered down versions of
traditonal arts.

if you wish to study some form of Samurai original art
then I would suggest that you study and art that is
classed as a 'Koryu' (old school). A good place to
sart looking is www.Koryu.com

Seitei Iaido is a watered down version of Iaijutsu
mainly from Eishin Ryu. Iaido is not concerned with
the strategy required when facing a partner as the
training is solo based.

Kendo again is a watered down version of old
swordsmanship, which has designated only target areas
and also always you to get hit when scroing your point
which in reality would result in you also being
killed.

Aikido studies on a small portion of the Daito Ryu's
shoden section from which Aikido originates. The
movements are excellent, however compared to Koryu
jujutsu it is far form a style thar was created to
restrain a seriously dangerous opponent or to even
kill that opponent.

Saying all this if no koryu is in your area, the I
would suggest Iaido if that was available

About jesuits in Japan

by rjuri

Greetings:

I am doing a research about the history of the
catholic church in Japan, in particular, their
educacional efforts.
Anyone have any information or source that speaks
about eduactional efforts sustained by the jesuits
missions in the XVI and XVII centuries?
Or information about any effort developed after the
banning of the third Tokugawa shogun? (outlaw of
course).
And finnaly, about the moment of the return during the
Meiji restoration?

Thanks you in advance for any help.

Rodrigo Juri A.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

The definitive history is "Deus Destroyed" by George Elison.

Well, Shaolin_master20049, I actually suggest you do a google search
of Anthony J. Bryant before trying to impress anyone with your "about
four years" of study.

What has this list come to?

Ummm.... dude...

"SCA" stands for "Society for Creative Anachronism." See http://www.sca.org .

Nothing to do with samurai, although there are a few people in the SCA who have
Japanese "personae."

And mellow out on the attitude. You haven't got the chops to have earned it.

Reading this and other posts related. I htink Patrick
needs to not only appologise for passing out
inaccurate information but also needs to appologise to
Tony of his bad language.

Patrick, in case you dont know, Tony is a well known
internationally published author on Japanese history,
he is also recognised for his knwoledge and studies
(and skills) with regards to making japanese armous,
and I also believe a member of the SCA

He has been banned, as will anyone else who can't control themselves
here. Things have been getting pretty ridiculous and out of hand
lately, and it is about time that the moderators start tightening
the chains again for a while until things get back to status quo.
The moderators have the right to ban anyone they feel necessary, and
will do so without hesitation or warning. Let's keep everything on
track - this is a "Samurai HISTORY Forum", and flames will not be
tolerated. Furthermore, unless directly applicable to the Samurai,
or Samurai history from the heian period on to the end of the 19th
century, the purely martial arts posts need to stop. Iaido, etc. is
admissable for conversation as that has direct roots in the topic at
hand, but random martial arts conversations most definately don't.
Let's all try to get along and stay on track. We look forward to
more questions and conversation relating to the Samurai and Japanese
history.

Carry on,

Somewhat OT, I think: thanks to the moderators

by mieusedai

Thank goodness, I think that's the best way to go. Patrick didn't seem
the type to listen to reason, really.

Also, I will be glad to see a thinning out of the martial arts posts --
not because I have no appreciation for it, but because as you say, they
are more often than not, off-topic. It's especially frustrating when
those people insist that their budo, whatever it is, is ALL about how
samurai used to live, all the while spewing half the misconceptions on
that list of eleven posted not so long ago.

I've been a crusader for newbie-friendliness in the past, but when
correct information is given and people just don't bother to read it
even when pointed to it... the time for patience and tolerance starts
drawing to a close. It's also terribly embarrassing for me to read other
people cluelessly putting themselves in situations that are just setting
themselves up for ridicule or swift banning. Not fun.

Thanks to the moderators for keeping a chin up through all this, though,
you've been handling it like good sports despite all the flak.

Re: [samuraihistory] I'm new

Good morning.
Now that is a real good book. You know what I really
enjoy about reading those books ???
When I read those books I cann´t stop thinking :
Whoaaaa!!! That´s what this person thought and
belived, he is showing me how he used to lived, what
was his customs and what he did... That´s really
impresive to me. Well I admit that I really enjoy to
read a lot.
I recomend the book of five rings also, although it is
a more dense book.

bye.

Re: I'm new

by takayama_hara

Was that guy just "telling off" Anthony Bryant about the SCA or
Samurai history?

What is this world coming to. I think the SCA group he (the
offender) was talking about was the Genji, they are a lot of fun but
in no way are the a battle recreation group. They mostly have fun
and dress (sorta) like samurai.

Is this group a good resource for finding information on hard to
track down events and people in japanese history?

Thanks in advance

Michael

I think that is the rank of flag bearer which is the highest rank of samurai you could be.
