Shawn,

Can you be a bit more specific? What is the purpose of said kabuto? Is
this for a living history group? A desk sculpture? SCA combat? (Note if this
is for combat the "proper" way won't pass inspection for the SCA).

Why is it that you say a properly made kabuto would
not pas inspection? I can not think of any sca wide
convention that cant be met by a propery made kabuto.

Paul,

Actually, Matsushita-sensei ({Kozando}one of my teachers) doesn't make
armour anymore. He is reselling Marutake -san's (yoroi.co) work. I'll be
visiting Matsushita-san next week and possibly spending a week at Marutake's
next month.

Note: NONE of this armour is up to standards for combat organizations (SCA
etc.).

HI Mike

thats sad to hear, it is a shame to hear that another
traditional craftsman is no longer working.

My firend is married to a japanese girl whose father
is a traditional wood working craftsman. His main area
of skill is restoring temples/shrines. Because of his
work he gets to see areas some of only hear of.

He recently told my friend he is sad that he does not
have an apprentise to pass his familys hertiage on to.

i've worked out with the only sword maker in HI. He
knows both his history and martial arts well.

Paul,

It is odd, most Japanese could care less about thier traditional crafts.
Matsushita-sensei is old, however he has taught others and is perfectly
willing to share his knowledge. There are a few hard core traditional
armourers over here, they're usually pretty busy though.

Re Tokugawa Ieyasu's uma jirushi

by deanwayland

Hi Kitsuno-dono,

A minor correction, re Tokugawa Ieyasu's uma jirushi shown as No.4 at:

http://www.samurai-archives.com/mon5.html

Having had the good fortune to be able to visit the "Shogun" exhibition
at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, where they had the Sekigahara screen
and Ieyasu's uma jirushi on display, two things:

1. On the screen it "is" shown as per the above illustration.
2. However, the actual object does not have the red sun, it is quite
plain gold leaf. There was a note to the effect that it has often been
incorrectly illustrated with the sun on it.

BTW the dam thing is huge! We measured the length of the limbs of the
fan, and they came out to circa 7 feet! And IIRC a caption stated that
it was carried attached to the side of a pole 5.35m (17.5 feet) tall!
Which having recently carried a simple linen uma jirushi (5 x 6 feet) on
a 15 foot pole in a display, is no mean feat.

Yours

Dean
