Vampires

by g3mneye

Hey there everybody:

I was looking to do some research on vampires and wondered if Japan
has any legends about vampires. I know there is the kapa if you can
consider that a vampire.

But are there legends of vampires like those of western lore? I
heard the term somewhere of kyuketsuki does this mean vampire in
Japanese?

Thanks all,
Rod

"I was looking to do some research on vampires and wondered if Japan

Well, there are of course gakidou (hungry ghosts), which could be
considered a type of vampire (or ghoul). I read a story in a book of
Japanese mythology that featured vampires that looked like children
that had a water receptacle in the top of their heads. As far as I
know, Japan didn't have legends of traditional western style
vampires. I have read a few legends about the vampiric Death Ninja
but it seems they were written in the 20th century and were somewhat
based on Stoker's novel (sort of like what you see in the Hammer/Shaw
Brothers film "The Seven Brothers Meet Dracula"...one of my all time
favorites).

Vampires

by g3mneye

Hi there:
I really hate to be a pain but I have to ask one last question
regarding the subject of vampires in Japan. I was informed by some
of you that the one form of vampire is the ghost woman who sucks the
blood of children during the night.

I remember hearing or reading I think about female vampires who
stalked lords and dranktheir blood. The only guise they had was cat
and when in it you could tell them apart from an ordinary cat by the
two tails they had instead of just one.

Does anybody know about this? I've looked and looked around but
haven't found this information again. Help.

Thanks,
Rod

Well the women would be a form of a Oni. A japanese demon or demon spirt. Hmmmm I know that in some myths that a kitune was like a japanese sumbumss. Sorry for the misspelling. Kitune is a fox spirt. In japanese culture their was good kitunes and their was bad ones. The bad ones would turn into women with fox features and lure men to their deaths.

Actually, no. It's a type of yôkai, as is an oni. Yôkai is a generic grouping
for ghosts, goblins, demons, monsters, and spooks in general.

An oni is a specific kind of yôkai.
