It depends on what you're really looking for. Do you
want a real antique samurai sword, or just a "samurai"
sword for a cheaper price? Carlo or Clive are your
best bets if the former is your goal--they can steer
you in the right direction.

Fodder et al-
If you are serious about collecting Nihonto I recommend a bit of study
first, there are many good sources of info and several excellent books
in English to help with your study. Do a search for "The Japanese Sword
Index", Rich Steins excellent clearing house for all things nihonto, it
is a great jumping off point. I am a long time student of the sword but
have yet to actually collect any, feel free to ask me any question you
like. Should you have the money to be buying truly collectible pieces
right out of the gate you'll also find links on Rich Steins' site to
commercial sites where they sell items for the deepest pockets...

Please don't post in all capital letters. It's the
email equivalent of shouting.

As for replica swords, try doing a google search for
"Paul Chen Swords". I normally wouldn't recommend
getting anything but the real thing, but as you're on
a budget, that's the route I'd suggest.

My first sword was a paul chen, although not brilliant the quality is a lot better than the good awful things on ebay. You best bet would be to save , your uk based so if clive picks this up he maybe able to help out. but like all good things you get what you pay for. Personally buy a few books and learn what to look for in a good blade also check out the excellent sword display at the british museum. To cap it off better to invest in some good books on the subject and save for a better blade that way you wont get ripped of. james

Samurai Swords

by soshuju

Mark et al-
The best advice has already been posted and that would be to invest in
an introductory book on swords, Like Yumoto Sensei's The Samurai Sword
or the always excellent The Japanese Sword by Sato Kanzan. After that
save your money up and invest the real deal after you have come to
understand just what makes a true and collectible nihonto. I pormise
your money will be better spent, the swords and the culture will mean
so much more to you and you'll find the journey a real pleasure.
Was it Lizzie with an interest in the construction of the sword? The
Craft of the Japanese Sword by Yoshindo and Kapp is THE book for would
be hammer-monkeys lots of great photos, technical details and still
surprisingly readable for those of us not into all the tech talk. Again
I steer anyone interested in Nihonto to check out the following site;

http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/nihonto.htm

Good articles, the one on eBay fakes is a must read, and in addition to
an on line primer as it were, enough linkage to other sites to satisfy
any curiosity, good hunting,

Hey there Nate,
Do you know of any awesome poems that speak of the nature of swords? I am to present an analysis of poetry about any topic for my English literature class. specifically about the creation of the sword or perhaps a certain move?????
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sorry, can't help. Someone might be able to, but I
don't know of any poems to swords. To mountains, to
cherry blossoms, to winter snow, to autumn moon...yes.
Swords? No. And I'd be bored to tears by them if they
did. L`

Hmmm...what would you recommend? Can I hear what you have on the 'Autumn Moon?' my apologies in regards to a 'sword poem' (laugh) I had to think about it, and I agree! Its just that we have to do this on a number that we have never heard before. The first thought that came up was of a sword. I appreciate the assistance and patience on this but I need your help, seriously..
thanks
