The Miura clan took their name from the Miura
peninsula, to the immediate southeast of Kamakura
(Present day Yokosuka area). Not sure about their
exploits during the Gempei war, though they did serve
the Minamoto and Hojo during the Kamakura shogunate.
The Miura family continued on into the Sengoku. I
don't have the source information in front of me, but
I believe they were defeated by the Hojo (the later
Hojo) around the early 1510's or so, as Hojo Soun and
his son expanded their control of the Kanto. Miura
Yoshimoto supposedly committed suicide in defeat by
slicing off his own head--a neat trick, but sadly not
one you can repeat.
