Shintoism

by phillipmichael1861

Hello all. My name is Phil and I have been trying to find some good
information on the religion of Shinto. I am one that does not belong
to a religious faith due to personal reasons but I do find a
resemblence in my personal beliefs and that of Shintoism. I have
been surfing the internet but I would really like some hard copy
books to research. If anyone can make any recommendations, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Phil

I've just finished reading 'Shinto: The Way Home' by Thomas
Kasulis, which primarily gives Shinto a modern cultural
context. Probablyt worth perusing.

You may want to try and find a copy of the Nohon-shoki, it has lots of info
on the topic of shinto and its first hand accounts.

It shouldn't be hard to find; I just found a copy at Waterstones.

I found that SHINTO THE WAY HOME is available at Amazon.com. I found two
other Shinto books that focus on prayers, meditations, and current practice.
Each was written by a Westerner who is currently practicing Shinto, each having
been taught by Japanese. I ordered one of the meditation/prayer books. I am
actually a Christian, an Episcopalian -- unlike many current-day people of
various religions, instead of focusing on "the One True Way" of my particular
religion, instead I find so much in common in various religions and spiritual
beliefs. The pastor of my church has also led us in various spiritual paths,
not just strictly in her own Christian Episcopal beliefs.

I've also found that in Japan and I believe in other Eastern societies, that
religious beliefs are not nearly so clear-cut or exclusive as they are in
the West. I know that many Japanese practice both Shinto and Buddhist rites and
find nothing contradictory in doing so.

Hope this helps, Nina aka "Wave Tossed"
