Research

by the_reserve2004

I was wondering if anyone can give some modern day misconceptions on the samurai, especially in anime, movies, books, video games and the like. I am writing a research paper on this topic and I badly need ideas.

Thank you.

Thanks...that would help greatly with the "Western Conceptions" part of my paper. But I was wondering if there are any sites on the misconceptions and truths anime (e.g. Rurouni Kenshin), video games (e.g. Samurai Showdown), and fictional books (e.g. Legend of the 5 Rings) on the samurai bring.

Specifically detailing each and every
mistake/misconception in each of those? No, I don't
think there is. Sounds like that's the work you need
to do for your paper. Though I'm sure we'd all love to
see it once you're done, and Kitsuno may be even
willing to post it on his website.

Question...

by the_reserve2004

Hello.

I am adding the "Top Ten Western Misconceptions About the Samurai" as one of my major sources for my paper. I was wondering if anyone can give me the details about this website, like the author and such.

Thank you.

Mucho domo. It does save a lot of time to just post the link and
say, "look here, stupid..." to the modern ninja/samurai.

Thank you very much! The site is really helpful. Just a question though, how were you able to come up with all those misconceptions? Did you use other sources or did you like conduct a survey regarding what people thought about the samurai?

Re: Question...

To be honest, I just couldn't help but notice a pattern in idiocy.
EVERYONE was making the same basic mistakes. (The eleventh one came
later, after by some strange coincidence about 3 or 4 people on the
forum starting saying how 'samurai loved and served the emperor with
their life, every single one'. And they've kept coming.) As for my
sources, basically just common real knowledge on the samurai. If I
had to make a bibliography, I suppose it would
read: 'Tony', 'Kitsuno', 'evalerio', 'LTdomer', 'Maikeru', 'nagaeyari
', 'Tsubame'... (sorry if I've left someone's name out!)

Re: [samuraihistory] Re: Question...

by the_reserve2004

Hmm...I see. I asked some people from my school about what they know about the samurai, and most of them, if not all, told me things that they probably got by watching Rurouni Kenshin or by playing games like Onimusha. One or two even told me that they thought the samurai were invincible warriors until they got to see The Last Samurai.
