Japanese Things to See - Help

by Rick Howard

Hello,

I will be doing some traveling over the next few months and I am looking for
tips/suggestions/ideas and where I might finds some interesting "Things
Japanese" to see along the way. You never know where you will stumble into
an interesting collection, museum, or suit of armor. Does anyone have any
recommendations for:

EUROPE
Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Hague, Netherlands
Brussels, Belgium
Paris, France

UNITED STATES
Minneapolis, MN
Chicago, IL
Jacksonville, FL (and north Florida, in general)
Las Vegas, NV
Phoenix, AZ
Albuquerque, NM

If you have recommendations for any place else that you would be interested
in sharing, please do.

Thank you for your help and advise.

Rick

Hi there,

I'm Ben and I live at Antwerp - Belgium.
I know some places that you ( Rick Howard) can visit during your stay in
Brussels

- The Japanese Tower and

-The Chinese (heum, don't really know the right translation ^-^! ). Some
sort of house for a very rich guy.

We call them officially "De Japanse toren" and "Het Chinees paviljoen"

I didn't find any English language sites, but you can see some (little
pictures) at the dutch site underneath.

http://www.belspo.be/belspo/ostc/institut/mrah/chinjap/chinjap_nl.stm

or http://www.bruxelles.irisnet.be/nl/4nl_cult/nl_archi.htm
(wich as the option for an english version...)

For more information you can contact the following agency:

Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis
Van Praetlaan 44
B-1020 Brussels
Belgium
Tel :+32 2 268 16 08

+32 or 0032 = the same

Didn't find any e-mail, sorry

For more site about the above you can visit www.google.be and search for
"Japanse Toren" or "Japanse toren Brussel"

Hope that this info was usefull,

Greetings,

Ben

Art Institute of Chicago (Michigan Ave, can't miss it)
is fabulous, and usually has a very good
collection--wonderful Hokusai and Hiroshige
collection. Not sure about armor and such--it varies.

Not much here...I grew up in Jacksonville, and it's
severely lacking in anything Asian besides American
Chinese restaurants, though some decent Japanese ones
have opened in recent years. Though you can get really
good Lumpia because of the Filipino population.
Anyways, sorry, you're probably out of luck unless you
go down to Orlando.

Nate

Hi

he Milwaukee public Library in Wisconsin USA has a
fantastic collection. Its just north fo Chicago.

It has 8 suits displayed in a Japanese style house,
with racks of Yari and Naginata. There is also a
scroll on display which has sits of armour and armour
related items in it (nothing else) it is beautifully
painted. They have a Naginat blade in full polish
which also has a white paper from the NBTHK

In the stores they have a very good collecton of
swords Tsuba and if i remember right they had a deep
draw that was just full or arrows. They also have
several other sets of armour and kabuto in the stores.

I took a lot of photos when I was visiting in 1989,
and 94 I can email a few if you wish

Paul, Nate, and Thomas -

Thank you! That is the kind of information and suggestions that I was hoping
to receive.

If anyone else thinks of anything/anywhere else, please let me know.
