Hi

in some cases the kodachi is also regarded as a
wakizashi.

Several Ryu still teach the use of the kodachi, two I
can name are Kukishinden Ryu (3 kata) and HonTai
Yoshin Ryu (5 kata and I think some ura gata).

Re: [samuraihistory] okay, this is a stupid question - kodachi

by umaryu

HI

here is a brief description. I wont go into details to
much as I assume you are not a member of either ryu.

kukishinden Ryu (KSDR) Kodachi has only 3 kata for the
use of the kodachi. Once source I know may try to say
there are a further 7 ura gata for these 3 omote gata,
but i have seen a Kukishin ryu densho and no ura gata
were listed in it.

In each one the attacker will come at you with a
katana and he is trying to cut across at your torso.
The reason for this is you are moving around him and
you decide when to expose a weak point therefore
making him attack the area you choose. Once he does in
all three you rush in fast and thrust the kodachi into
him.

In Hon Tai Yoshin Ryu (HYR), I have not studied. I
have been shown the kata once and I have them on
video. therefore cant describe them properly.

There are five omote kata and I am told maybe some ura
gata (which I have not seen or know of). They like the
Kuki kodachi involve thrusting and a few slashing such
as to the neck or torso.

The HYR tend to sink lower in kamae than the KSDR.

However there is a historical link between the two
ryu.

Kukishinden Ryu is really called Kukishinden Happo
Biken, and originates from Kukishin ryu (main branch
of that is now Kukishinden Tenshin Hyoho) This all
originates from the Kuki family who are today still
soke of the tenshin hyoho branch, and also head
priests of the Kuki shrine. IN the 1600s Ohkuni Onihei
was a shihan in the Kukishin ryu and met with Takagi
Gennoshin from Takagi Yoshin ryu. together they
exchanged ideas etc and Takagi Yoshin ryu was changed.
Kukishin ryu Bojutsu was added to Takagi. In the early
1900's Ishitani (Ishiya) sensei on his death bed
handed menkyo kaiden makimono for the Takagi Yoshin
ryu to Takamatsu Toshitsugu, they were to be passed to
Kakuno one of his students. Both Kakuno and Takamatsu
held menkyo Kaiden in Takagi Yoshin Ryu and kukishin
Ryu. sort time later Minaki sensei is handed menkyo
kaiden in the kakuno takagi ryu and from him him the
HYR is developed.

Re: [samuraihistory] okay, this is a stupid question - kodachi

by umaryu

HI

I just recieved a pick of a kodachi that once belonged
to a very famoius member of the Yagyu family dated
about 1600. it has just been repolished and is about
to be submitted for new papers elevating it to a
national treasure I will ask if I can post the pic I
was sent

HI

here is a brief description.

The Kodachi is a sword, ranged between the wakizashi and the katana.

Then again, I'm only speaking from what I know of the kodachi thanks
to Rurouni Kenshin, not a bad source but not the highest reputed either.

Re: [samuraihistory] Re: okay, this is a stupid question

by soshuju

All-
Remember that we are talking about 1000 years of history here. A
kodachi is many things sometimes difficult to distinguish. In
archaeology, its earliest incarnation was a dagger and several
different forms of knife were called kodachi. Several different
combinations of kanji were used as well. Later kodachi was used to
describe a short katana and then wakizashi as in the usage common in
Koryu Kenjutsu schools.
In the world of ART SWORDS, a kodachi is a very specific thing or
things; for students of nihonto a kodachi is an early blade in classic
tachi shape signed in tachi style on the haki-omote but half again (or
less) smaller in overall proportions. Lacking the tachi signature a
blade might be called kodachi if mounted in tachi koshirae. However
small blades in elaborate tachi koshirae were made for and used by the
members of the Emperors court, these bejewelled "Kazari"tachi were
small but not meant for real use so there is a distinction drawn.
So if you are talking kodachi, it helps to keep your audience in mind,
are we talkin Kofun, kantei, Koryu or Kozure Okami?

Hi Paul,

Any idea of this kodachi's actual dimensions, blade and grip length
etc.?

I'd like to know that too, I always go by the source of the Rurouni Kenshin anime.

Yes, it sure does, I have never been more interested in a sword as I am right now.

Tom Helm <junkmail@...> wrote:All-
Remember that we are talking about 1000 years of history here. A
kodachi is many things sometimes difficult to distinguish. In
archaeology, its earliest incarnation was a dagger and several
different forms of knife were called kodachi.

Re: [samuraihistory] okay, this is a stupid question - kodachi

by umaryu

Hi

the kodachi I have (Iaito) is the same length as any
long wakizashi. The wood one i have is also the same
length, I was pleased to find one form Japan that was
the same.

I can measure the blade length if needed.

The trsuka is a standard wakizashi length handle

Re: [samuraihistory] okay, this is a stupid question - kodachi

by umaryu

HI

I guess like any weapon it would be used for either
attack or defense.

as the kata I do start with you both facing each othe
rwirth baldes drawn I would say it could that either
one is on the offensive.

with the kukishinden ryu kodachi kata moving in such a
way to make an opening then I would say it could be
either
