Three years ago I was in eastern Japan and I saw the Uesugi matsuri in Yonezawa) and the Takeda ('sayonara')matsuri (in Kofu), held respectively at the end of April/early May and the end of the first week of April (although the dates for both are open to a little variation).

Re: [samuraihistory] samurai festivals

Well, Wayne, it depends on the particular festival
you're looking for. Different parts of the country
have them at different parts of the year--there's no
national "Dress as a Samurai" Day or anything.

http://community.webshots.com/slideshow?ID=140951969&key=xVpHsZ

The above are pictures I took at the Hojo Godai
Matsuri, in Odawara, Kanagawa-prefecture, this past
April. The festival celebrates the famous Hojo family
that ruled much of the Kanto during the 1500's. Feel
free to check the pics out.

In addition to that one and the Takeda and Uesugi
festivals previously mentioned, I know the Nagashino
Festival in Nagashino, Aich Prefecture, is also held
in April--it reenacts the Battle of Nagashino, between
the Takeda and the Oda. That's high on my list of
places to get to. I'm sure there are other festival
reenactments elsewhere, at possibly different
times--if you're looking for something in a particular
region, I'd be happy to try to help look something up
for you. At least when I get back to Japan and can
look it up in Japanese again.

Additionally, different from the above festivals
mentioned, many places have Yabusame demonstrations at
various times of the year. Yabusame is mounted
archery, where the rider shoots from horseback at 3-4
targets as he gallops down the course. Very
interesting--I attended an event in Kamakura in April.
Meiji-jingu shrine, near my house, has Yabusame in
November. Nikko has some some other time of year, too.

Hope that helps,

Nate

samurai festivals + stuff

by biz_in_japan

First off, thanks again to Michael and doumo arigatou gozaimasu to
Hide

2nd to Wayne, check http://www.jnto.go.jp/dblinks/DE/FRM/MI.html
(this is the events and festivals page of JNTO) this could be of some
help as a starting point, I used it quite often during the couple of
years that I lived in Japan.

3rd to Thomas, you should got to Nikko to visit Tokugawa Ieyasu tomb.
There is a huge festival in spring and a smaller one in autumn to
commemorate him.

Cheers, Warren

maido and sayounara (for now)

by cepooooo

Hi there, this is Cepo from Honolulu.
This is a brief message to apologize about my temporary absence from
the list. Since I have got back from Japan at the end of August, I have
been swamped with school (beginning the MA thesis) and I am not able to
participate to the various discussions here and on Japan-O-Rama... :o(
Too bad as well that I wasn't able to meet any of you in Kyoto or Tokyo
(couldn't go in the end), however there will be more chances.
So, I am silent, but I am here.
All the best to you all, and catch you later
