by so5642

Hi,

I'm new to the list and wanted to get a good book on Japanese History.
Especially early history. Any suggestions?

Scott

How do *you* define "early," and what specifically are you interested in?

I would suggest reading the Hagakure by Yamamoto, Abook of five rings,
Musui's Story( the autobiography of a Tokugawa Samurai, Samurai Sketches and
The Samurai History by S. Turnbull.
Whsmiths is a good site for Samurai books.
Hope this is useful George

Two good general titles that I like are:
1) Zen & the Way of the Sword by Winston L. King
The best book I've read for discribing the phyche of the samurai. It also goes into the making of
katanas which was very interesting.

2) Secrets of the Samurai by Oscar Ratti & Adele Westbrook
To be honest, I was hesitent to recommend this book since it was a $2 special at half-price books
but I was surprised at how much information was in this book. It is written like a thesis paper
for the most part and very dry but contains a lot of history about the various training and
Martial arts of the Samurai.

Mirumoto Kojiro
The Isawa's Pet Dragon

In my strategy, the training for killing enemies is by way of many contests, fighting for survival, discovering the meaning of life and death, learning the Way of the sword, judging the strength of attacks and understanding the Way of the "edge and ridge" of the sword.

Start at the start
With SANSOM and his History Of Japan, Pick your time period; "To 1334, 1334
to 1615 or 1615 to 1868". Once you know the names and events that interest you
most where you go from there is limitless...

Re: [samuraihistory] suggested reading?

Here are some of my suggestions
For General History
George Sansoms History of Japan Volume 1

For some books on the early Samurai
William Wayne Farris Heavenly Warriors
Makoto Sugawara The Ancient Samurai
Karl Friday Hired Swords

I once came accross an extensive bibliography on the web. I can't recall who
made it. I downloaded it and printed it out but the only trace left of where
it came was bibpeh.html Maybe you could try Yahoo.
