What's in a name?

by thomas5403

Can anyone help me (and it might prove to be a long and tedious
inquiry) with naming conventions in the Sengoku Jidai?

I have a historical fiction piece I'm finishing and want to
understand how the names work.

I'll present some queries as a guide:
Toda no danjo Shohitsu Yasumitsu [briefly the father-in-law to
Tokugawa Ieyasu] - Toda is the family name, Yasumitsu is the
personal name, no danjo I believe to be a title(?) but what of
Shohitsu?

What is the function of 'middle' names?

From the previous, many such names have a '-aemon' suffix,
what does this signify?

Does the hyphenation of a name signify anything, if not, why
are some names hyphenated?

The only thing we know about the warring States Period is that's when Inu
Yasha occurs. Gomen-K&K

Thanks Nate for the link, and congrats Tony for all the effort!

Everything to be read - but at first glance I'm still unsure of 'no
danjo' - but will research further.

Try this as a primer. It's from our book "Sengoku Revised Edition" (ISBN
), co-authored by Tony Bryant and yours truly. Just FYI.

Thanks Mark, with that and Anthony's 'sengokudaimyo' stuff, I
have enough to keep me 'safe' I think!

I still can't trace 'no danjo' however (unless I'm being particularly
thick). It's not crucial, I was just wondering.

I believe its subtitle is "sengoku jidai otogizôshi" -- a tale of the sengoku
period.
