RE: lost samurai topic

by msr_iaidoka

Hey all,

I only know of one non-Japanese individual bestowed with the title of
"samurai." His name was Joseph Bass and he trained with Nakayama Hakudo,
Nakayama Zendo, and Saeki Hijime in Iaido and Kendo. From what I know he
was, in essence, knighted by the Japanese government. This was back in the
late 50s or early 60s I believe. He was also given the surname of
"Hanokami" with his knighting-esque award. I hope that this made some kind
of sense and I appologize if anyone finds it hard to believe.

Peace,

Matt

Matt-
Rather than hard to believe I think the question everyone has is "What
exactly was the title?" Certainly prominent foreigners and naturalized
Japanese have been recognized by the Emperor and the Japanese
government for their contributions to Japanese culture and the Japanese
Nation. I believe Donald Richie has been recently honored in just such
a way. However, these awards are not to be construed with knighthood or
samurai status.
The samurai (with all due respect can we use bushi or buke?) were
abolished as a class in the 1870's by the Emperor's own government and
with the stroke of the Emperor's own pen(seal). No one can convince me
that 8 foreigners have been given the privileges of the class while
legitimate descendants of buke families are denied same!

Surely if the Emperor needed the help of the World Full Contact Karate
champion so much so that he knighted him, wouldn't he keep him close at
hand? If anything did happen he would be too late to help if travelling
from Manchester!?!
