The Gatling gun was apparently first used at Petersburg, VA, in the American
Civil War in 1864-5. It was formally adopted in 1866 by the US Army. Indeed,
one of the factors that brought about Custer's disastrous defeat in 1876 was
that he apparently disdained to bring along a Gatling gun detachment because
it would slow him up! Thus, it is entirely possible that a friendly country
like Meiji Japan could have been shipped some by the 1877 rebellion. Prof Murf

I remember reading that the first use of the Gatling gun was during the NY
Draft Riots in 1863. But perhaps Prof Murphy was referring to its first use on
the battlefield?

The gatling gun was not used until later int he war bcos of supposed confederate sympathies by Gatling... thats why it was adopted several years later and you see uses of it ont he battle field later, but domestic uses earlier..
