That's interesting - the Yakuza man I met claimed to be part of the

Long story.

Saito san-
The sento (public bath) near my house closed at 22:00, I always got
there late on Tuesdays. Sign says "No bathers after 21:45" and "No
persons with tatoos". I always got to stay after ten on Tuesdays
because like clockwork at 22:15, a young man with half-sleeve tattoo
would come in and take his bath. Though we were the only two people in
the place we never spoke, never shared the same bath and I never asked
the proprietess about him. I KNEW he was Yakuza full stop.

That's what long sleeve shirts are for.

Well, the yakuza do not go around naked. :oO
You don't see their tattoos as far as they don't take their shirts off.
Besides that, yakuza and ordinary people tend to ignore each other.

In Japan, gangs are viewed as (for the most part) socially acceptable.. the yakuza, like American gangs and "mafias" are composed of poor ppl trying to make a better life (well, not ALL of them are) however, in the West ppl say "That person'sjust a hood, thug, gangster, etc..." whereas in Japan its "Oh, how sad.. that person is soo poor that they had to become a gangster. Im so proud they are trying to better themselves" so showing off tattoos is nothing to them.. if they own businesses, the symbols are on the buildings. They dont hide the fact that they are organized, they just hide what their organizations do. Whereas in the West, ppl denied for decades, even centuries about even being organized...

I guess depends on the tattoo. Dragons, geisha, samurai and other
"traditional" themes covering the whole back and the arms are not
recommendable for the commoner, while more ordinary tattoo are today
quite normal among young Japanese. I would say that about half of the
Japanese nationals who are studying at my University (UH, Honolulu)
have a tattoo.
Interestingly, the second, third and fourth generation Japanese here in
Hawaii, often get their ancestors' kanji tattooed below the neck. So, I
see around a few young boys and girls roaming around campus with
"YAMAMOTO" or "SHIMABUKURO" (in kanji) on their back.

Dave-
In and around Tokyo there are plenty of people sporting tatts publicly.
Some older folks might not be anxious to befriend you and store clerks
might eye you, but they do that to all gaijin. Little different than
most of America. The one place it would be a problem is the sento
(public bath), most places would ignore a single tattoo, but all over
art would get you tossed. If you want the bath experience look for
Ryokan with private or single family baths...

There is still a Japanese taboo on tattoos.. that is the reason gangsters have such extensive ones.. they want to show just how much they are willing to change their bodies for their gang..

While we're on the subject, anyone know who the top Japanese tattoo artists
are? I plan on having some extensive work done in a few years and would like
to know ho the best guys are. I'm looking for the traditional method, as in
non-electric.

Thanks,

Thom
