Yakuza

by nihontonut

I was wondering about the origins of the yakuza, I have herd that they originated from porters, (a group
that were easily recognized by their extensive body art). Or were they simply a mixed group of rufians
and wayward ronin? All this is assumeing that they originated in the 18th or 19th centurys, or are they
a much more recent development?

They originated from firemen.. the different groups of fire brigades were much like gangs with their own colours and flags and such.. if more than one group arrived to the scene of a fire at once, then they wuold duke it out over who got to be the lucky ones to have the glory of putting out the blaze.. One person would hoist the banner up to the top of the building to show that his brigade was fighting the flames, until either the fire was put out, or the fire consumed him... Or at least, this is what I was taught in Japanese culture class..

That's interesting - the Yakuza man I met claimed to be part of the
Yamaguchi-Gumi....

Long story.
