Introduction and Question

by edhienk

Hello all, my name is Edhie. I live in Sorong, west-papua. I am
interested in samurai and their history. I am a beginner about
samurai swords.
I have a question about samurai. First of all, is every samurai sword
has a number on the sword?
What is the meaning of this numbers?
The samurai my friend told me have two numbers, first 1356 and the
second numbers is 510023 are these numbers mean something?
The samurai I talk about was found in a cave, in north sulawesi, are
there a specific history event take place in there? Suppose 1356 is
the year when the samurai was forged.
Thanks anyway for those who willing to share their knowledge.

It sounds like you have found some second world war swords. These were
mass produced samurai swords and they were numbered.

Hi Edhie. I do not think the sword has been brought to Papua by a
samurai. Most likely, a Japanese soldier in WWII. Regarding the
numbers, are they Arab (=roman) numbers or Chinese numbers? I doubt
Japanese swordsmiths used Arab numbers in the 14th century...

The interesting part is some of theese swords have
letter written in Japan, of course I dont really know
much about katakana-hiragana so I cant understand it.
The letter was kept in the hand part of the sword.
Suppose the soldier has left a letter for his family,
I really like to get them delivered.

Edhie,
Woha, cool! This seems like an interesting story!!
How many swords are there??
I imagine the Japanese soldiers were trapped and preferred to hide the
swords rather than have them taken away. they might have thought to go
back get them later on, but looks like they never did... Sure we can
find out more by reading the letters!!
If you can send a scan, sure I can translate it for you. If there is an
address, we can try to deliver it as well.
Alternatively, you can send via ordinary mail (=post) a photocopy of
the letter to me or anyone else in this mailing list willing to do the
translation. I am actually pretty good at translating, plus my wife is
Japanese and I can have it double-checked at the Japanese Studies
department here at University of Hawaii.

Of course I will try to send the copy letter once it
arrived in sorong.
Talking about the number of swords; In north sulawesi,
people there found 3 swords according to my friend.
He give me some metal bar where found along with the
swords. I dont know whether this metal bar has
connection to the swords.
I have checked that this metal is made from brass.
I'll send the picture of the metal bar.
There is another 9 swords found in Fak-Fak (west
papua), and they say that these sword on average has 2
m length.

Hi

the numbers are generally found on the mass produced
swords from world war 2.

These swords generally belonged to NCO rather than
officers.

My uncles father obtained a sword from a Japanese
soldier in papua New Guinea in WW2

I have a picture of a metal bar made from brass. This
metal bar also found longside with the swords. If
permitted I will send the picture.
This metal bar has some logo in it, maybe someone will
know what this logo means. Of course this logo was not
japaneese.
To describe the logo, it has a "V" in the middle and
an "o" in the upper left of the "V" and "c" in the
upper right of the "V". There are two Star painted
above "o" and "c". also below "V" there is a number
1356. so its like this
* *
o c
V
1356

NCO means non commissioned officer.. it includes several ranks between just being a soldier nd being an officer is about the best way to describe it.. There were differences between officer's swords and NCO swords.. such as the colour of the wrappings, the style of saya (sheath) and many others that Im not too familiar with...

NCO: Non Commissioned Officer. An NCO is a sergeant of
various ranks.

Are there any colored samurai sword in the history?
I mean not the hand part but the blade. Like the sword
was made from any metal other than steel, like Bronze
or Brass?

Nope------for Egyptian metallurgy, good start is Breastead, A History of
