Books for sale on Ebay

by mackyukuk

Hi all, I'm having a loft clearout and am selling some books on Ebay.
These are my collection of books on Japanese armour and weapons which
I put together a couple of decades ago. Hopefully they are of
interest. Here are the first four, I will probably put some more up
in a few days:

Hmmm, not easy to bid on these books - the reserves are far higher than the
starting bid price which means that unless there are two of you willing to
bid up to the reserve nobody gets them (as happened to me on two;-( ).

Steve, I may be wrong but as I understand it, you don't need anyone
else to bid against - you increase your own bid until you reach the
reserve, or your own limit if that comes first.
The reserve was set at the price below which I would not sell, the
starting price is just that, it's there to attract some bids - set it
too high and you scare people off.
I may try these books again on Ebay in a few weeks.

That's correct, that's how it works.

Except the Ebay systems won't allow me to raise my own bid unless there's a
bid to go against, all I can raise is my maximum bid, not my current bid. It
does come up with a rather fancy message telling me that I haven't reached
the reserve yet and should try raising my maximum bid - which has no effect
whatsoever.

I'm pretty sure all you have to do is increase your bid until you get
to the reserve price, until that time, it won't matter, but once you
raise it up to the reserve price, you'll be the high bidder. At
least that is how I understand it. The EBAY FAQ should tell you
exactly how it works. I've never created a reserve auction, but I've
bid in them before.

Is this what it would do if your maximum bid was below the reserve,
regardless of you current bid?

To be honest I can't be sure, I did try some ridiculously large maximum bids
on one of them though.
