Japanese Culture article

by kitsuno

"Part rabbit's foot, part religious relic and part security blanket,
omamori
were created centuries ago to keep the devil at bay and the gods
attentive.
These days, the tiny amulets are employed against more worldly
problems.
As Japanese have stressed out in the past few years over rising
unemployment, crime, record suicide rates and new strains of disease,
they're rediscovering this ancient ally in a bid to fight gloom."

I've got one hanging in my car, and one on my backpack
I travel with.

I also hung one in my tank when I was a tank platoon
leader...

You've seen those "Kotsu anzen" (Safe Driving) stickers that you can buy at
shrines (like o-mamori) to stick on your car or bike? I had a colleague at Tokyo
Journal who had about a dozen or so plastered on her scooter (all from different
shrines). She then got into an accident, and the policeman, taking the report,
looked at all the stickers and told her -- with a straight face -- "Konna ni
takusan, kami-sama o okoru, yo."

Oops, sorry...

"With that many, you'll piss off the gods." (The implication being that the gods
of the various shrines would be feeling slighted that she didn't consider them
"enough" to satisfy her concern over her safety so went to "competing" shrines
to "make sure.")

Heck, yeah. Everyone knows "love" goes with archery, not swords. Cupid didn't
stick people, y'know.

That's exactly what my girlfriend said, when I had one
from one shrine, and thought about buying another
kotsu anzen omamori...

"Okamisama ga yakimochi o wa!"

I love how you guys rip into to people for wandering off topic and
then waste bandwidth with rib tickling tales of your girlfriend and
omamori.
It is nice to see this list finally come alive. As a member
of several lists like this I think we learn alot about the people in
the group from some of the off-topic banter. Wouldn't it be more
constructive simply to request that posters put 'NSR' "Not Samurai
Related" in the subject line? Then we can all join in, lurk or delete
as we see fit.
BTW I give anzen unten stickers to all my friends who drink
and drive, and have omamori on all my bogu bags. I also think the
Swiss are the most evil people on earth!

traditional/historical Japan?

....actually it WAS on topic, considering it was in response to an
article posted about Omamori in Japan.

There is some form of correlation with omamori and
samurai.

The evils of the Swiss? How does THAT relate at all.

Give me a break.
